Cochin Thread!!!

Thanks, I didnt look much into the wingbands until they were just mentioned..they looked like our cattle and goat tb tags that I have used..and I've had them ripped out on both animals and its not pretty..but an option I'm open to. I just have more research to do before I make a descion, but thought maybe one was better than the other when it comes to cochins.

Wingbands are great. Haven't had any traumatic issues in 3 years of using them. I use them in all my breeds.

Do you guys use silver wingbands, or colored? I was hoping to use colored idenfication-1 color for each breeding pen so I can easily identify..I've read that the feathers will cover the bands so their not noticble, but still easier to pick up and move feathers to see colors...then being all the same color and reading the numbers on each bird.


Are these acceptable to have in your birds at shows? (I havent showed before, so this is all a new experience, and why I have so many questions)...I show/ed cattle and any personal identification had to be removed before the show....

Yes, I use them on my show birds. You can use a different color for each breed or year hatched. They come in lots of 100.

I find that it's hard to use the 1-100 bands I'm always getting numbers that can be upside down confused for example 86 and 98. You probably want to start with 100. i'm on about my 4th or 5th set now

never got a answer for my cochin question, am i asking in the wrong forum?

what i asked was: my rooser and hen cochin are 8 mo old hen never layed eggs yet but 1 week ago rooster started mating.. now he mates a lot especially with 1 of the hens so when do you think the hen will probably start to lay her eggs

Waterfowl-anytime..some hens lay early, some late. I know some hens dont lay until 10 months...Im sure the rooster just hit puburity, but that will not make the hen lay, it will just make her eggs fertilzed, she should lay when she is ready..and Im sure this cold weather is not helping =)

i like them because they're not highly visible or susceptible to getting snagged easily. the down side is ID from a distance. unless you have birds you can tell apart. for birds that look alike, then i use the split colored rings to ID individual look-alikes. like my red dorking girls, one has red, one blue one white... so i can see at a distance which is which. i don't tend to keep many identical birds, though my silver grey girls are harder than most to tell apart. they're all color id'd tho, and permanently banded (silver band, but the numbers aren't readable from a distance either). but the split colored rings come in like 12 colors, and some of my birds are double banded so i don't confuse them. black/blue and black/yellow are my 2 oldest girls, pink/white is my next oldest, etc. i used one color for hatch group and a second color for individuals... then again, dorkings also don't have feathered legs to hide what they're wearing...
