Question about identification- Do you guys use leg bands, and what size for bantams?
I just researched them on randallburkey.com..and it looks like they come in diffrent sizes, etc. but not sure what size I would want, and do you take the bands off for shows?

Can you tell I'm new at all of this? I am trying to get my research and plans figured out before hand (still trying to find blak and barred bantams, of course now seems to be the worst time to find any for sale). My CI membership form is sitting on the table, waiting for the mailbox tomorow a.m., and the sop is next...hopefully some birds will pop up too.

Oh and do most of you use bandettes or spirals? I dont plan on having enough birds to know identification numbers, if the spirals are much better/easier...but it would be nice. Also, when do you put them on your birds?

I like wing bands. You can put them on at just a few days old and don't have to worry about them getting too tight as they grow

i prefer wing bands on the feather footed varieties... and i'm starting to use them on my lf birds too with just colored bands (key ring style) to id individuals i keep.

I really like the plastic numbered bandettes for my birds. They are easy to put on, stay put and the numbers do help to keep track of which birds came from which pens or where they were purchased from etc. I buy the size big enough for adult birds and put them on when they are about 4-5 months old. They usually fit by then. I use colored zip ties on chicks if I need to separate them or keep them identified. I think mine are size 7 but you could probably go with 9's too because their feather feet really don't allow anyting to slip off.

I personally do not like wing bands. I know a lot of people swear by them but I had a serama hen get a wing band caught on welded wire fence when she was pacing back and forth and tore it half way out of her wing. She was just hanging there and could have been there for a good part of the day for all I know. It was a freak accident but I won't use them after that mishap. I have never had a bird get hung up by a leg band but that is just my own personal experience.

Thanks, I didnt look much into the wingbands until they were just mentioned..they looked like our cattle and goat tb tags that I have used..and I've had them ripped out on both animals and its not pretty..but an option I'm open to. I just have more research to do before I make a descion, but thought maybe one was better than the other when it comes to cochins.
