Cochin Thread!!!

Wow! You drove all the way from Iowa to NY and you weren't even showing? That's dedication! Had you made previous arrangements with breeders to buy some birds? Wish I could travel like that to shows - but finding someone to take care of all the critters left at home is a challenge. Any pics or pointers you can share? You're right - most folks at the shows are just great - always willing to help and lend any advice and share their experiences.

I find it very difficult to leave a show empty-handed - so just how many birds went home with you???

Footnote: The annual Rocky Mountain Feather Fanciers show is here in Denver October 23rd. Hope to see a huge Cornucopia of Cochin this year!!

I took 4 birds to show, came home with 6 and tried to buy 1 more but they would not price it. I did hope to pick up a pair of Columbians from Jamie Matts when I went there. I liked them enough to bring them home. My black hen picked 1 in her class. My cock only placed 5 in his class. The 2 Columbians I took were 1 & 2 in their class but none picked to go on. I always take an extra carrier to any show I go to. I have feeders for all my birds that will feed that pen for at least 3 days. I just filled all the waterers the night before I left. My wife was checking on them daily but only had to feed the chicks. The last of my chicks will be old and large enough to go into the grow pen next week if the weather will stay nice.I have several neighbors that will watch my place and take care of everything if we left on a vacation. I do the same for them when needed. I have found that old pig creep feeders work very well for chicken feed. They are easy to clean and are about indestructible. I didn't have any in indiviual cages so that made the work much easier.

Congrats to your Black hen and Columbians! Do you have pics you can share? We'd love to see them!

Are you thinking about showing in Denver next month? What we may lack in show size we make up for in hospitality!!!

I wish I knew how to use the camera and post pics from it. I am not skilled at digital anything. I am showing in Wisconsin in about 10 days at another Cochin District show. I entered 5 birds for that show. I won't be going to any shows after this next one for the rest of this year.

The 2010 APA National will be held this year only 30 min. from my house!!!!!!!!!! It will be Dec. 11 and 12th in Shawnee, Oklahoma along with the Oklahoma State Poultry Federation 94th Annual. Anyone need a place to stay?
I will take all the pics I can of all the nice cochins.
I am origionally from Michigan and have lived alot of places and can tell you that people in Oklahoma are very nice and the poultry people in Oklahoma are the nicest.

I am starting in the brown reds and lemon blue.. Here are a few of my men (The brown red was fence fighting with another cochin) All are young..
