Quote: so what is a btr supposed to look like? I do have a much darker red with black tail, but don't like his tail... this is when he was a bit younger, but it seems he's filled out but the tail hasn't (yet?)
I do like his wing carriage tho

oh, and I've got 6 RED chicks growing out too! at least 3 are pullets (I think). they're about 4-5 weeks old right now.
this guy (above) hatched late November or early December. so still has a bit of developing to do (I hope).

That looks great. Is the "red" in these birds an expression of Mahogany on a wild type gold base?

Male. Hackles and neck a deep intense red. The head is supposed to be a glossy deep intense red. Back and saddle deep red. Tail is to be a glossy greenish black. Breast red. everything deep red except primary coverts which are to be black edged with red and secondaries the upper web black fringed with red becoming a deep red red in the secondaries. Females are very muh the same except that a hen is allowed to have the top two tail feathers be fringed in red.

Updated pics of my Blue Barred pullet. She is the sweetest thing. I bought another Blue Cochin chick but it got hung between the feeder and side of the brooder and I wasn't able to revive it. So I'm on the look out for more. Sweet Lula Bell is about 10 weeks old. There isn't anything wrong with her wing in the first pic. I think she was fixing to take off. What do y'all think? I think she looks good to have come from a feed store.

ok... what would you consider this guy? he's from my own breeding, of blue partridge split mille hens with a mille fleur/calico roo...

I have another growing out much like him but a bit darker red with a much smaller tail/cushion.

i'd almost be tempted to say red tailed black? red/Columbian?

could he be used to work on a red tailed black line? anyone know what genetics are behind that variety? I can't seem to find much out about them.

here's mills. (as a chick he had some white speckling, so we thought he'd be mille fleur). he belongs to a friend, but she needs to rehome him, so i'll be taking him back to find someone for him. (if he doesn't stay).

forgive the odd pose. LOL and yeah his wings could be tighter.
but i'm more interested in what color he might qualify as.

I think he is a beautiful rooster & beautiful coloring too! I love how intense his "red" color is!

Mills, the first red roo, doesn't have the mahogany gene, but the second one I think does...

black cochin bantams gave the explanation of what they're supposed to look like. the 'wild type' as in the e+ gene, is not present in any cochins, tho the red in mills is unmodified.

Thanks. I picked her from a LF Cochin pullet bin of assorted colors. I thought I had a blue, but really lucked out and got blue barred. I know she came from Ideal Poultry in Texas.

I think the female barred Cochins are black? Mine were anyways. The boys were blue barred. Not an expert at all though :). Pretty bird!

. Pretty bird!
barring IS a sex-linked gene, but that simply means that hens only carry 1 copy of the gene, where roosters can carry 2. being a dominant trait, if they carry it they WILL show it.

and a hen that carries the barring gene can be any color and still be barred... they are separate and independent traits. so you could have a splash, blue or black barred, as well as red, buff, or any other color that cochins come in...
