Cochin Thread!!!

Due to predator nightmare here last year I had to use pullets eggs to get chicks this year. Not my preferred method but it does work to hatch the smaller eggs. Good luck!

Thanks. I don't like to hatch pullet eggs either because other breeders here lie about vaccinations so unless they are mine I won't use pullets for breeding. Once the outside hens have passed a year I will use them for breeding and my pullets from this year's breeding.

Seriously....I have hatched 10 bantam cochin eggs this spring/summer and have 7 roosters!! That is just not right!!!

First of all let me apologize for the length of this post and the size of the pics...spent two hours trying to reduce them with no luck.

Secondly, I'll apologize because this is a "What sex is my chicken" post.

Long story short - I have the opportunity to purchase some excellent quality chicks and would like to know what I already have before I choose new chicks to add to my flock. I have 7 LF Cochins that are 8 weeks old. I am only sure of the sex of one of them. I have read the "how to tell..." Posts but what I read is conflicting with what I see. Six of the chicks feathered quickly and I have one late bloomer. Five of the quick to feather have red combs and wattles, a couple with yellow tips. The slow starter has a small yellow comb and no wattles. Any help you can give is appreciated! Okay, enough rambling here are the pics...

1. Minnie...the one I'm fairly certain is female

2. Eve...my first hatch

3. Bunny Blue...blue chick

4. Pearl...self blue?

5. Danny Boy (although I have no idea if this is a male)...black splash?

6. No name

7. And the ugly duckling

Again, any insight into sexing these guys will be appreciated greatly!! :)

There is a LF Cochin thread on this site, and I think you might get a more accurate appraisal from there. I only know enough to know that LF are different than bantams and they mature at a very different rate. Pearl, no name and ugly duckling are a bit of an enigma to me and I wouldn't bet money on any guess of mine being correct. Tom Roebuck is the LF "go to guy" and I know he frequents the thread I mentioned.

Thank you very much for replying. I had considered posting on the LF thread but noticed it is not nearly as active as this one. I'll take your advice though and post there as well.

. Thank you. That's what I was afraid of. I'd really love for 2, the black, to be a girl though.
