Cochin Thread!!!

All this genetics talk has me curious what would you get from a lemon blue hen and black roosters.

A mess, why? Unless you have a plan with a goal and know how to get there, I wouldn't recommend breeding two different colors. (Other than blue, black, splash) and the blue gene is called the Andalusian gene. That is what causes the dilution in different grades and the "Blue" also needs to be laced to be correct, that is part of the Andalusian genetics.

nothing predictable. black can hide many variables as can white. so pretty much any off-color crosses are not predictable. won't say never, but pretty much close to it.

the blue gene is a dilution of black. so basically a blue or splash is genetically black with the dilution added. that's all. other color varieties layered on a black bird would be barred or mottled. barring is dominant, mottling is recessive, but still basically on a black bird.

white is capable of masking pretty much all other mutations.

crossing gold and silver varieties of the same basic pattern (laced, partridge/silver penciled, brown-red/birchen) those crosses are more predictable.

but crossing a laced with a birchen, or black with anything, white with anything, that sort of thing, you're going to get a mishmash of stuff that's likely not reproducible or identifiable.

Ok ,thanks

I'm not going to breed her she is just a pet. I was just wondering what might come for it. Thanks for the help genetics has pecked my interest and got me wondering what would come from certain pairings.

No reason really the thought popped up in my head of hey what would come if you took this hen and put it with a certain color rooster. Yes, I agree I'm not going to breed her just was curious so thought I would ask you guys.

This is a link to a tool that I have found very helpful and just plain fun. http://kippenjungle.nl/kruising.html
The combinations that you can try out are nearly endless. It might help answer some of your questions and as I said just have fun trying any mating that you can think of.

My comment on this that a Black bird may not be a "Black" genetically. Many of our varieties have been bred to other varieties/colors for improvement purposes over the years. That makes truly knowing the outcome of any mixing of varieties to be a best guess sort of arrangement. I understand the fun in wondering what would I get if I bred certain varieties together.

I was wondering if there is any way to find out if a black bird is hiding anything? Is there a test mating that could be performed?

yes but it would take several generations, as the dominant black would win out in the first generation most likely. IMO you'd produce more useless birds than useful in any breeding programs. pretty egg layers maybe but thtat would be the extent of it.
