Cochin Thread!!!

Hi folks!
frow.gif
I usually don't post pix on the forums, but I am curious and would like to know something from you experts. I have a pen of young cochins I had hoped to separate and create pairs. I have been looking for a lavender hen/pullet so I had left them all together for now. I started getting eggs and just thought I would test them to see what I got. I have a Lavender Rooster and a Black Mottled hen that are pretty attached to each other and the same age (7 months or so) I also have a Blue Frizzle Roo that is younger and a black pullet that is even younger. I knew if the Lavender/black pair crossed, I "should" get black chicks-split to lavender and mottled. But.........................isn't there always a but in there somewhere? I got my first test hatch on Saturday of 4 cute as a button chicks.

My question is....could that little one in the back left be blue?? The shot really doesn't do it justice. It is much lighter and has tons of yellow compared to the other three. I would love to get a blue from the frizzle boy. The goal was to put him and my hens together and get blue/black chicks. I wanted to find a lavender hen for my lavender roo and pair them off, but I haven't had any luck at all finding any much less a hen. So you guys tell me. This is my first batch of Cochins and I was pleased with a 4/4 hatch rate. I just would like to know what to look for in the chicks to know which is which or are all these black?

Anyway, please forgive my rookie questions, and thank you for your time and advice.

to me, they all look like blues. my blacks are always a nice deep black with white/yellow bellies.

That would be even better for me lol. Thank you. I know my D'uccle's have always been very black, but again, this is my first set of Cochins, so these are my first chicks from them and I wanted some guidance.

@3birdgirlz - yes, blue x black gives both blue and black. I want blue, but I want a nice deep blue like my roo. So I had planned to put him with this hen already. I just thought maybe he was still too young.

I seem to have an odd situation, that my younger blue roo has taken over the dominant role in that pen and my lavender boy has bowed out to allow this. That is why I wanted to see if these were blue. My fingers are crossed. I pulled the lavender roo today to leave just the one roo in there. I will wait a couple weeks and then collect some eggs to see if these chicks look like any future ones. By then perhaps, I will be able to really see if they are going to be blue or black. And maybe I will see some curly feathers to see if I got any frizzles.

Thank you folks for all the imput. Since I have bought my stock when they were already several weeks old, this is the first set of little chicks I have had in Cochins. Do these guys look ok? They have very nice heavy down on the legs and feet like my pair, and short backs with little puffs for tails/rumps. They are active and alert and I am really enjoying them. I have had Seramas, D'uccles and Silkies, so this is a new adventure.

I have a question for the genetic experts and it's on barred cochin. The barring on my barred cochin looks silver is it actually a silver gene giving that color to their barring. also can anybody give me a complete list of the genes in a barred cochin
