I give untreated yard grass as Bonus or treat along with balanced diet. Allergic to Hay/Straw we did try it in coops, NASTY smelling stuff.Ok, guys can I have your opinions on this. I've never heard of this being bad for them but if it is please let me know. I have heard on a other chicken page that feeding your chickens grass is not good for them and that you should use straw not pine shavings. Which I feed my girls grass at times to give them a well balanced diet. I also use pine shavings cause I was told that straw is a place where bugs like lice can hide and that pine shaving don't give them a place to hide. Can you tell me what you think of this because if I'm doing something wrong I want to fix it. I like to do what is best for my girls and keep them healthy and happy. Thanks![]()

I think someone else needs to educate themselves before giving bad advise. If a chicken was out free ranging, they'd be eating grass - among other things. Grass is perfectly fine for them. Make sure to give them grit with it so they don't get impacted crops. As for straw over shavings because of lice hiding places... Straw will hide them fine, too. Bedding is more of a personal preference, I suppose. For the most part shavings are the most common. If you get a lice issue, it's easy to treat with some Sevin dust, poultry dust and Ivermectin pour-on. I'm more leery of a chicken eating straw and causing an impacted crop or something.
He is mega pretty! Nice job!
