Cochin Thread!!!

can anyone tell me what coloring this would be described as or just as mix I am trying to find some Cochins this color but have yet to see another one with this coloring on any listing I've found

It is Columbian based but mixed with something else. I have seen many people pop those out of the "calico" breedings and call it calico but it is just based on Columbian and has more colors thrown in somewhere down the line. I actually have one of those in one of my pens, not really for color but more because he is an incredible sweet rooster that I love to pet.


These are 2 such boys. They are brothers but I have the lower one in a pen with some hens and the top one is in a grow out pen so I can sell him. I will probably sell Calvin, too as I really do not need him but he is so super sweet! He loves his petting and cuddling and that is, after all, why I have Cochins!

I heard a rich buff was desirable? I recall someone posting photos of an almost neon orange flock of buff LF cochins and everyone was fawning over them.

Consider looking on the Cochins International webpage. go to the varieties section and look for actual pictures of almost any accepted variety. The education page is full of helpful information for anyone with Cochins. You do not have to be a member to access information. As always enjoy your Cochins!

some are better quality than others as far as the markings, but these are Columbian bantam cochins...

with the gold leakage in your roo, I'd say he's only got 1 silver gene (rather than 2) so the buff leaks thru a bit. I've got 2 boys that are both split and have the gold leakage. the one in the group pic is one of them. I haven't had these birds very long (got them on MLK Day) but I'm in love with them. the best hen came from Tom originally but was passed around a couple times I think. all I have is a pic from the person I got them from, she kept dodging the camera. LOL

except for this first pic, the rest were all taken about a month ago, before my silver laced got penned for breeding. I'll be penning the Columbians, reds and blue mottled soon. I just need to finish 1 more pen!

finding quality Columbians may be a challenge in itself. if you want good ones, do not go with hatchery birds, you'll be disappointed IMO.

joining Cochins International (the breed club) will give you access to the list of breeders around the country and what varieties they have. that was probably one of the best things I've done in recent years. 8)

Can anyone tell me what the color of this hen would be called? Shes a cochin bantam from TSC last year. I've googled "silver penciled" and "silver laced" and neither of them seem quite the same. Any thoughts?


When she bred with a Silver Laced cochin bantam roo, the chicks turned out solid black.

Great thank u!! I have been reading other post since u posted these pics and have seen that most everyone is commenting that quality Colombian is hard to find!!

I am currently the #1 exhibitor of Columbians in the USA using the Cochin International breeders points list. I have to hatch a lot and save a few to get good ones. Some of the best Columbian breeders will not do well in a show. . I absolutely love the Columbian pattern.. When you want to learn about a variety ask questions. I did. Always consider the source.
