Thanks.Nope...new mommas usually aren't! Your baby should be fine with her momma even if the other egg doesn't hatch. Usually you only have a problem with a lone chick if it was an incubator hatch with no hen. Congrats!!!!

I have not hatched with a broody yet, but from what I have read(mine keeps going broody so thinking about letting her hatch some...doing research..LOL) if the hen is still sitting on the egg then she senses it will hatch.....so hopefully it will! What a good girl, teaching her new baby while hatching the other! God luck and keep us updatedThanks. They really love each other. I'm not going to put them in with the flock right away. They will go to a little coop by themselves. I don't trust my flock to not hurt the little one. I really do hope the other egg hatches. I'm actually pretty sad about that other egg. These were Lavenders first babies of her own. There were 4 eggs, two were clear, and the other two developed normally, but the one under her was put under her a day later. Today is day 21 so I hope Im just being paranoid and it still hatches. She has no interest so far in getting up. She eats and drinks with the baby while she broods the egg. I hope if it does hatch it is soon, poor lavender needs to move her legs.
It is such a tragedy to see living beings being forced to endure this type of torture. I completely understand why you felt the need to rescue at least one of them! I have had that same reaction at a local pet store with a sick ferret. The problem is, that when we give these monsters money to buy their poor animals, we are enabling them to keep repeating this disgusting behaviour, and to make a profit at the animal's great expense. I don't know if your local animal control has an emergency line, but if you ever see anything like this again it will be much better for all of the chickens unfortunate enough to fall into their greedy hands if you could get animal control out immediately to seize the birds & press cruelty charges. That will hit them right in the pocket book, which is the only way to get through to pigs like them. I'm so sorry you had to see that, and I really do wish your poor little bird well. Bless you for helping her!I know I was taking a risk bringing her home. But I wash my hands and all that good stuff after handling her b/4 I do anything with my chickens. She is separated and everything too. There was just no way I could walk away after seeing her like that. I had to do something.
