Cochin Thread!!!

Ok guys I know the chicken I rescued is not a cochin but I know a lot of you feel the same way I do about chickens so I just wanted to share my story with you.
I went to my local flea market today and walked in and looked at my husband and just started to cry. The way the were keeping the chickens just broke my heart. They were stuffed in tiny cages, stacked on too of rack other. No food no water in 91 degree weather. ( they were in shade). They had open sores. Gashes, cuts, missing feathers, infections, eyes swollen shut. Crossed beaks, curved beaks. Just a night mare. I picked out the worst hen I could find and bought her and brought her home this morning. Here she is

I just finished making her a temporary home. I don't want her to give anything my my chickens until I know she is ok. I carried her around to let her know she was safe. She is only used to bring grabbed by her legs and carried around upside down. I put poroxide on her gash. Then anti bare risk wash then neodporan. I feed her some cracked corn and some start and grow. It has more protein I. It. I figured it would help her. Any more tips on what I can do to help her?
Awww...poor babies!!! It is so sad that people keep chickens like that... treat them like product not animals with actual feelings and needs

I would call animal control, although I am not sure how they would address this, as people come all over to sell at a flea market. Most likely, they would address it at the flea market and the sellers would not return which would not solve the problem

Bless your heart for rescuing at least one! She is gonna need a LOT of TLC!

I know and I'm willing to give it to her. I wish I had room and I would have saved them all. I am keeping her separated from my flock to watch her see how she heals and make sure she doesn't have anything she can give my flock. I just couldn't leave her there.

honestly I would have kept my distance and called animal control.. no idea what those birds might carry and the chances of transferring that to your own flock are just too great. hope it all works out and she heals fine.
I know I was taking a risk bringing her home. But I wash my hands and all that good stuff after handling her b/4 I do anything with my chickens. She is separated and everything too. There was just no way I could walk away after seeing her like that. I had to do something.

Totally understand and I think if you take all the necessary precautions, your flock should be fine! Good luck with her!!

This is so sad. I can honestly say I am very much the same kind of person. I went to a sellers house to look at a Lamancha goat that was in milk, with her twins and she was so skinny I just could not leave her and her twins. I probably should have not purchased her as I could have gotten a better goat but I could not see her and not help. Her hooves were so bad that she has very weak legs. She has been checked out by a vet and now resides with my herd and I am very happy to report she is rapidly gaining weight and growing stronger with better hoof care. Luckily her twins were purchased in good shape. Hope she recovers as quickly as my girl is recovering.

Here is a pic of the cute family

These 3 have been chosen to be added to my flock as future breeding roosters. I have 9 total and these I picked. The red frizz cross with the low wing set is Sebastian. The one with black in his wings which is the nicest of all is Samuel and the lighter orange is JR.
