Cochin Thread!!!

I'm sorry to hear that! But all of your 8 week olds are adorable! I think Cry Baby is so pretty !!!
Thank you! Cry Baby loves to be pet and scratched on the head but if you pick him up he will cry and wiggle and make a fuss till you put him back on the ground. -_-

Great looking flock! Seriously adorable picture of them all lined up! LOL to the tantrum...Nivens want to be a house chicken
Thanks. They were testing out their new perch. They posed long enough for me to get that pic then they decided they wanted to play again and all jumped down. And yes, Nivens is not impressed with this whole 'outside' thing at all.

I was going to get a Cochin in the order I placed a few days ago from mypetchicken, but that would have delayed the shipping by a week due to availability. For next time, is this an ideal breed for pets? My chickens are pets and friendliness is my top priority with them

, so I would love to hear experiences with any nice or mean Cochins people have had. Tbh it would be awesome to cuddle them, so would anybody describe Cochins as cuddly or friendly or lap chickens? Thanks

This is the review on them that I found on BYC when I was looking to order my Cochins in May.

Pros:
“very nice, cuddly, good mother, great pet”
“Sweet, affectionate, calm, great mothers, fluffy, and easy to raise.”
Cons:
“You'll end up wanting 50 cochins.”
“Feathers on feet get dirty and torn up. Not the best layers or meat birds.”
My little chickies are VERY friendly. If I'm giving one some scratches for longer then a min they will go behind me and pick and scratch at me trying to get me to pet them, or they will lay down right between my shoes and start taking a dirt bath. I have to pick them up or they will fill my shoe full of dirt. -_- If you sit down on the ground with them they like to climb in your lap and just sit.
I have had a fantastic experience with my Cochins. They each have such funny unique personalities from each other. If your not worried about egg production you might really enjoy them. I have seen some people on BYC say that their Cochins lay very well so I guess it just depends on the bird. I have read they tend to go broody as well. I have 13 LF Cochins.

<-- I asked my hubby to watch them for a few min while I cleaned their pen up (we have hawks) and they were climbing in his lap before he fully sat down. The one under his left arm is Foxy, his girlfriend. (He didn't know I took this till the camera clicked at him.

Oh my too cute!!!!!

This is a sad day indeed. I, as a first time chicken owner was thrilled with ( what I thought to be) my two Cochin girls. I now find out that Nemo my believed to be beautiful big black Cochin girl is ,for lack of knowing what to call her is....well...a mutt! She is a mixed breed. I discovered this quite by accident. I was browsing Cochin videos and on line articles and found out the terrible truth.....the shame of it all....Nemo has black legs and feet! Although she has all the Cochin attributes, black shinny feathers, lovely temperament, heavily feathered legs and feet etc......her legs and feet are black and from what I've read that means she is not a pure breed Cochin. :(. I will not love her less nor hang my head in shame... LOL . Now it sort of makes sence why she is half again as heavy as her Cochin coop gal pal. Oh well live and learn.
(side note: as a baby she had a bent wing feather, hence the name Nemo)

Rainbow still doesn't trust people. I still have her by her self but she is next to the others so they can see each other. She seems happier in general. Her gash on her back is healing nicely. No new feather growth yet but she is eatting and drinking well and poops look good! My phone once again won't let me post pics but I will try to post pics if her.
