Cochin Thread!!!

some hatcheries sometimes have show quality birds that they will sell, but can be quite costly.
Where would this be? I have no problem with hatcheries, but I've NEVER seen show quality from any of them. It would be SO much easier to get birds from a breeder/exhibitors show stock. You're going to need to have birds shipped one way or another, why not go to the "source." Buying from a breeder just makes more sense.

I put 13 Cochin eggs in the bator Tuesday, Gold Lace, Blue, Black & Splash. I've never had a Cochin, what can I expect? At what age and how often do they lay? Are they ok in a coop with a run vs' free range? Are they friendly? Loud? Heat hearty? Cold hearty? Any info would be great, Thanks!!

Well I'm not a cochin pro, I just got my fist ones this summer. I can tell you I'm addicted. I LOVE Cochins. They are very freindly and pretty calm. Mine are still chicks and I read they get calmer with age. I have also read they are cold hearty b/c if all the fluff and feather and there frathered feet help protect them from cold toes. They don't do to good in heat. But adding a fan to the coop making sure they have plenty of shade and water and I also saw where you can fill bottles and freeze them over night a d put them around the run during the day and they can lsy against them and cool off. As for run/coop vs. free range. They do very well in run/coop. General rule of thumb is 4sq foot per bird in coop and 8sq foot per bird in run just so they have plenty if personal space if they want it. They are not very good flyers, well at least I read that the standards aren't b/c they are so heavy so they need lower roost or step ladder roost so they hope up one by one. And lower nesting boxes. I saw they boxes and bottom roost should be 1 foot off the ground for they lowest set. B/c they aren't great flyers they are safer in coop/run vs. free range.
I love them, I hope you will too!

If you Google show chicken for sale there are are couple page's that come up (stromber's chick and game unlimited is the one I can think of off the top of my head)

Jewel my amazing broody Momma. She took them out free ranging for the first time today and they loved it. All the chicks are doing so great and integrating very well with the rest of the flock.

I'm familiar with Stromberg's, the only thing I'll say about that is, you go ahead and get your show birds from them and I'll meet you in the show hall's. We'll see how well they do. BTY, you can show anything, the real question is how well will they do.

Cinder is getting big! I think I have a little boy on my hands, but that's okay. He is the first LF cochin we have hatched here, and he was the lone survivor of his hatch under his mother, so he stays. :) Also I was really hoping for a splash, and I got one! His mom and dad are both blue. Dad Mom (she has some broken back feathers :( ) She usually looks better.
Yep! Got a splash! Blue to blue breeding will give you 50% blue, 25% splash, and 25% black. :)
