Cochin Thread!!!

Looks like a hatchery quality Mille Fleur d'Uccle cockerel. I really don't see any Cochin in this bird and it's definitely NOT a frizzle. I think the crest you are referring to is actually his comb, but you're correct with the sex.

I 2nd this. Not a Cochin and def a boy.
However duccles are great lil birds too!
I own one. A hen named Skittles.

Help! I need to find a gold laced bantam cochin in western Wa! My little girl only has 3 chickens, all cochins, a black roo, a blue hen and a gold laced hen. Her sweet little gold laced got chased by the neighbors dog last night and flew up into a tree. She was too high up for us to reach on the ladder. I found feathers and pieces this morning. I dont have the heart to tell her what happened, I just said she wandered off. She hasn't stopped crying. She will be going out of town for the next week to a funeral and I would love to have a new "Baby" here when she gets back.

Please, if you have one that you might be willing to part with, or know of someone who does, let me know. If we can pull this off, it will be the highest point of her summer! We live in Shelton, WA.

OMG! I'm srry to her that, how old was the "baby"?

delder, please don't think I'm upset. This is one of the things I hate about forums, it's all to easy for someone to come across in a way that they don't intend.  My hope was to passionately make my point. Guess I did, just not the way I had hoped. Andy's right and he made several good points. There is so much that goes into breeding good birds, let alone show quality birds, that it feels very frustrating when folks claim they have show quality stock when they haven't even exhibited a single bird of their own. I decided to revisit Stromberg's and noticed that they have no pictures of their "show quality" birds. Believe me when I say there's a reason for that. One thing I will give them is their prices, of the birds I looked into the prices were very reasonable if in fact they really were SQ.
I'm sure you felt kind of jumped on by me, or that you'd stepped in a hornets nest and for that I really am sorry.

I breed for fun here. I once was one of those that claimed to have show quality birds. I bought eggs from folks who have shown. Then I educated myself and now word my stock differently. I say I have pet and breeder stock. Also when asked about show quality... I say they "could potentially be at maturity"... But 4-H and fair shows in my opinion. As pets and breeders... Then my birds are great for that. And that some of my stock came from show stock and breeders who do show... So ya never know. :)

Since you are all talking quality, I was wondering if I should continue breeding my pair? I want to breed good quality birds. Cinder is our first baby out of them, and since he is so young, I can't tell what quality he will be. I don't have any really good pics of my hen in full plumage, and she is full of pins right now taking care of Cinder. What do you think? I can take constructive criticism. :) They turned a year in March

These are the only pics of her I can find, but they were all before she was a year old.

Double ditto on this. Years ago (when I was younger and had more energy) I bred d'Uccle's. I couldn't agree more, if they come from a reasonably good line, there isn't a better kids bird and that includes Cochins. At the Ohio National several years ago, I saw some youngster playing with their d'Uccles. ThIs was a group of kids, all down on the floor, rolling around, with their birds walking all over them. One little guy set his cockerel down in the middle of the floor and took off running. He got to the wall, turned around and started running back toward the little bird. The cockerel was just standing there, alert and unafraid, watching his kid running toward. The boy started a slide on the slick tile floor and came right up to the d'Uccle, actually bumping him gently when he arrived. I was AMAZED! The little bird had clearly been handled playfully and even appeared to enjoy the interaction with his handler.
YES, I agree mindylee they are great little birds.

You could probably have one shipped from Mallard Lane Farms

You're exactly right mindylee, it is impossible to sell show quality chicks. You can sell chicks that are FROM show quality birds, but you can't tell what you've got until they are no less than 8 months old. If you get eggs from breeders that show, again you're right, you never know. You could be hatching out the next Best of Breed or better. Honestly, that's one of the reasons I don't sell eggs OR chicks. "I" want the best. I've put all that work into getting them on the ground, so I don't want someone else coming along and beating me with my own bird.
