Cochin Thread!!!

Glad to hear about the mottleds. My blue was sold to me as a black mottled by a very ignorant lady. She bought some eggs from my big breeder friend locally. I got a good hen for real cheap. Like ten bucks I believe.

I don't have any pics, cause my computer keeps glitching on the uploads.

I have a question about the mottleds. I purchased a black mottled pullet (LF) from a good breeder in September. She has very good type, but very little white markings. I was told this would come in with her molts when she got closer to two. Then I saw several pullets - bantams - that are completely mottled at about the same age. Do the LF take that much longer for their markings to come in? This is my first mottled. The only other "marked" bird I have is a partridge cochin hen.

The way I understood Mottleds was that you can have ''early bloomers and late bloomers'' - Show the early bloomers as pullets and later bloomers as hens. I think also the early bloomers will have too much white to show after they molt and\\or as a hen.

As a general rule, a Mottled pullet that is well marked will be overmarked as a hen. Most of your Mottled breeders, show hens. That's when you will really know how well marked they are.

Also, no offense to the Mottled breeders, but it's hard to find a Mottled that even comes close to being correctly marked. The feathers are supposed to be marked with a white teardrop shape at the ends of the feathers and there are supposed to be a certain number of feathers marked that way depending upon the section of plumage (i.e., breast, back etc). Some of the breeders are very close, but many of the Mottleds are just Black birds with white splotches, or even a completely white feather in there amongst the black. Refer to the SOP for a complete description. The Mottled Ancona, if you can find a good one, demonstrate the pattern the best. We had a Mottled Cornish at our fall show last year that was very well marked and was Best AOCCL.

That is why I have been focusing on the mottleds lately. I'm sure it will take me many years to get the correct markings, but I am determined to have a mottled that is at least mottled and not blotched out with white.

My current hen has a few feathers that actually have the tear drop marking on them. She is also very blotchy, but It's all I have to start with. She has only gone through her first molt so far and after the molt she had more feathers with the mark and less that were just straight white. I'm fairly hopeful that in the spring she may even have less white and more correct markings.

Sadly at a show my mottled won BOB. There was an amazing white hen that I believe shoulda won, but the judge chose mine. He said he liked her markings and that she had nice white patches on her. I listened to his compliments all the while wondering if he was serious or not. The white also had better body type.

Sumatra, you've got to get things fixed so you can upload and share pics!!!
If there's anything we can do to help with the uploads, let us know. Are you trying to upload from your computer direct to the BYC host, or are you using something like photobucket?

I can't get photobucket or the image uploader to work. I have dial up, so I think it's just too slow of a browser. I can get pics to upload from my Flash drive at the library. I'll have to make a trip down there today I guess. I took some new pics last night and tried to upload again. I was so disapointed that I couldn't.

This is Zip, my Cochin/Serama Cross Roo.

This was the only pic I could get to upload. I just tried again. It loads one and then freezes up for the others.
