Happy New Year everyone!

I never posted pictures Of my Columbian Cochins from Tom this fall - and I haven't taken any recently, so I'll subject you to a kinda crappy cell-phone picture from the day they arrived:

I'll take actual picture sometime soon, I promise! I'm in the process of planning a move (into town, with a 4 hen and no rooster limit

- just for the next year and a half) and I'm busily deciding what I'm going to do with all the birds. I'm thinking the 11-year-old sister can handle all the Cochins, and I can just go steal all the fertile eggs from her and hatch them all myself, brood them until they start getting big and stinky, and then take them back out to the country to grow up.

We'll see.

Anyways, I'm looking forward to all the chick pictures soon as you breeders break the incubators back out!

I have a little White hen that's been laying 3 - 5 eggs a week ALL WINTER and I've been thinking about throwing a few of her eggs in the 'bator this week, the youngest sister will need a new 4-H bird of her own this year...

I have been out of town since the 26th and missed my Cochins and checking in with you all. My Husband took care of my chickens while I went to see my parents in Michigan and "he did good".
My 5 little hens have been busy; 32 eggs since Dec. 10th - can't wait for spring!

Gorgeous Columbians!! I bought some hatching eggs hoping for at least one really large, nice rooster for a pet but I plan to get some from Bo that I would like to show. These are just for fun but for practice, I'd like to know what to look for when culling for defects so I can rehome them as early as possible. I've read through the Cochin standard on Cochins Rule but it's for mature birds. I see defects as no feathers on outer shanks, bare middle toe etc. Will this be evident in the chicks? At what age can you successfully cull for pet quality....assuming I'm going to hatch some nice Cochins.

I had mentioned earlier in this thread that I wanted to find some Red Cochins and work with that variety. I was surfing aroudn the internet earlier tonight and found these pics of Red Cochins from another country, although they seem to have similar standards for their birds there as we do. The male in the pic has to much black in his tail but the hen is very nice and the color on b oth is opretty good. This is what I would like to produce in the future.
