Cochin Thread!!!

They ARE very lovely. I've never seen a red that had good type before, but the hen in particular is just beautiful. The roos type is nice in spite of his black tail feathers.
Very, very pretty.

Where are there from?

I was thinking about how intimidated we (my daughter and I) were when we went to out first shows 6-7 years ago. I want to encourage anyone who is interested in showing their birds to do so. I would love to see more new people at shows. I would hope that the more people who show their birds also means more people will be trying to breed to the standards. Thanks to the internet and a great breeder which gave us a lot of information on how to prepare our birds for shows.

We're doing our first APA show in Safford, AZ, next month. I've got a pair of bantams to take. They're young, and I don't know how they'll do, but it will be a good first experience. I've never even been able to attend an APA show. I'm excited! I've got a lot of studying to do between now and then! If I separate them right now, is that a decent amount of time to get them show pretty?

Mr. Ree :

I had mentioned earlier in this thread that I wanted to find some Red Cochins and work with that variety. I was surfing aroudn the internet earlier tonight and found these pics of Red Cochins from another country, although they seem to have similar standards for their birds there as we do. The male in the pic has to much black in his tail but the hen is very nice and the color on b oth is opretty good. This is what I would like to produce in the future.

I have a trio of Partridge bantams and a quad of Mille Fleurs and my 5 pullets ALL started laying in December! They are averaging an egg every other day each. I gave the first dozen to a friend with an incubator and 11 of 12 were fertile! Two later died in the shell but if all goes well I will have 9 chicks next week. In the mean time I have more than 2 dozen more eggs. One little pullet is acting broody on the ceramic eggs I keep in the nests. Maybe I should put the real eggs back in the nest?
I am suprized by my young flocks because most of my local chicken friend's flocks are laying very little now that it is winter, even some flocks that are production layers. Maybe my cochins don't know they are supposed to be slow layers or that their fluff is supposed to get in the way of fertility? I'm not going to tell them. I am just delighted and adore my chickens!
