My little feathery ovens hatched out three little Valentine's Day presents today. They kept the eggs going thru some record cold temps for Oklahoma!

Maybe they watch March of the Penguins?!?!?!?!?

I bet they'll get along. I have Dutch, Japanese, Cochins, Brahma bantams etc, etc w/ my large JG and BO and RIR roos - all get along fine.

Okay, so I have this 5 month old Mottled girl. She sure is filling out nicely. However, there isn't a speck of white on her.
Will she develop white tips later?
Mine have always had white by this age. She is banded so I know who she is out of and I like her type well enough to keep her but I am not sure who to put her with with all this black on her. I have a full brother to her that has plenty of white, which is what I like. I don't like to breed full siblings if I can help it.

He has lots of white and is 9 months old here. I was going to put him into another project but what do you guys think?
Sorry, this is the only photo I have of him right now. I know it isn't great.

Wow! She's only 5 months? I can't remember seeing a hen so typey at that age! And look at how nice and high she carries her wings. Were both her parents mottled, or perhaps she is just split to mottled? Do you have an unrelated (or her sire) that is mottled that you can put on her, or is the brother her only choice?

From the photo, he looks to have good type as well, but it looks like he might have too much white. It looks in the photo like a lot of feathers are solid white, rather than just having the tips mottled. But maybe it's just the light in the pic.

Amy, do you have pics of the sire and dam you could post? That might help a bit.

Yup, she is only 5 months. I sometimes get girls that develop early.
I had a gorgeous pullet that I would have loved to kept but she was blue Mottled and I sold her to Nellabean. That girl was typy from 2 months old on up. I think she posted a photo of her on this thread. Really nice hen now. And she is out of the same flock. I don't care for blue Mottleds.

This pullets parents are Mottleds. It was a father to daughter breeding that produced this girl.
I do not own any other Mottled roos, just father and son. I just purchased a Mottled pullet from Judy Gantt this past weekend for the son to breed.

Yes, the brother does have a lot of white and some feathers are mostly white. I don't breed for showing and I like a good bit of white. These are birds I will use in my MFC project and others. I like type but specific details like perfect color in birds already being shown is too boring to me. I like creating and helping but not showing too much. I hope to help with the MFC but once accepted I will direct my breedings in another direction.

This is the mother last summer .........

she may have solid in her background. I have never had a mottled that didn't have at least a few tips as a young bird and they get more as they age. do you know if she had a tuxedo pattern as a chick because if not you have a solid bird on your hands but she will be split to mottled so she will still produce (in theory) 75% mottled chicks when bred to a mottled male
