Ha! Alas, as much as we like to think we are in control of our breeding programs, we really are at their mercy . . . they truly have all the power. And just when the days start get longer and warmer and they start laying again, oh no - they're just kidding - now it's time to go broody, which can throw them back into molt! And so it goes . . .

So very TRUE !!

Here is one the frizzle again in his coop and really shows his round body better(wish I made the door on the coop larger

I had a question about cochin chicks and feathering out. New to it all.

I have 10 cochin chicks (black, blue & splash, all same age). One blue is quite bigger then the rest and has really feathery feet too, compared to the rest. Is it just maturing faster, or is it just going to be a big chicken?

How old are your chicks? And good feathering on feet always good. What do the combs look like, so nice to sex them at an early age, unlike Silkies LOL

I have noticed that my Columbians grow and mature much faster than my Blacks. I would think that different lines within varieties may grow at a different rate.

They are a little over a week old. This one's comb looks smaller and light in color. The other two blues have slightly larger combs and are grey in color. I'll get some pics tomorrow if they sit still long enough

Guys, when should I begin expecting eggs from my cochin pullets? They're ~20 weeks old. Our Australorps, the same age, have not yet begun laying (though I expect they might start in the next month or so). The 'lorps have already begun the egg song, and their combs are bright red.

As for the cochins...paler combs than the 'lorps, no songs from them....
