He's a super nice roo too, very sweet. I have him in with my 3 lavender hens and a very nice black hen~ Molly just started laying too!! I bought this pair and my lavenders from Austin Hart, very beautiful, healthy birds and his prices are very reasonable.

Maybe we can do some "blood" swapping at the end of the year

Sounds good to me! We can wear a path out between your chicken house and mine!!

It has been a long time since I checked in on this thread.

I have never seen a birchen cochin and was curious if this is a recognized color.
I just received eggs from an auction on BYC. Most were black split to lavender, a couple mille fleur, a couple mottleds and she threw in extra eggs that were marked birchen.

Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks

I'm just a novice but I think Birchen is the opposite of Columbian; instead of white or buff with black hackles, they have white hackles on a dark body. Help, folks with more experience.....

My standard of perfection is not new but Birchen is one of the Bantam recognized varieties. Barred,Black,Blue,Brown Red,Buff,Columbian,Gold Laced,Mottled,Partridge,Red,Silver Laced, and White are the other recognized Bantam varieties. My best answer is find an APA standard of perfection and read the description. The description is long and different for male and female.

Mrs. Fluffy Puffy :

Quick question for the experts - What will I get if I put a SLC roo in w/ White cochin hens?

Most likely Black birds with some silver or brassy silver in the hackle. Hard to tell what the White is hiding.

Finally got my first egg from my pair of Columbians from you, Cochinman2005!

Going to see if little "Hera" gives me a few more eggs before the weekend to run a fertility test (I have 98 quail due Saturday, then I'll give the 'bator's a good sanitizing before putting any chicken eggs back in there!). I'm planning to put "Zeus" over two of my other Columbian girls too - it's just that the big A-frame coop I want to move them all into needs to be moved, and it's still frozen solid in about a foot of snow!

It's been awhile since I've had Purebred cochins, most of mine were mixed.
