Oh, I can't wait to see pics of your new SP's when they arrive!! There are some Partirdge breeders on our Cochin Breeder Directory (link below in my sig line) - hopefully one of them can help you with some eggs.

My mind isn't focused right now (so what else is new
wink.png
) - what will you be working toward crossing the SP and Partridge?

That was suggested to me as a way to improve the SP's without losing the pattern. I've got the "plan" written down somewhere, seemed pretty straightforward.
OK, here it is. Opinions welcome.

SP Male x Part Female = SP females & Gold Duckwing males
Cross SP females back to sire

I love the idea of the chicks being sex-link. Hope my info is correct.

I love the hens, they are very beautiful. How old is the male? You might have said already and my bad memory is the problem. I'm hoping he's very young and has a lot of room to develop. He looks a bit tall to me, but man! those hens or gorgeous, and they're LF. VERY nice.

I never mentioned their ages - sorry !
The Roo was born last May so he is just over 10 months old and the 2 Hens were born early March so they are 12 months old.
They were left to start laying naturally and only started in the last month - nothing was rushed, we just let nature take its course.

These are my first Large Fowl Cochins - so I am trying to learn a little more about the breed, I have been told that it is best to have a couple of blacks too to enrich the blue coloring from the genes.

So any advice from fellow breeders would be greatly received.

Thanks
Dr Rob.

Great looking Cochins Doc. I just got some new cochin chicks and don't know if the chicks are bantam or std. The chicks a few days old now and they are the size of stardard chicks we have purchased before. Are the Bantam Cochin chicks smaller than a "normal" sized chick? Would love some info. We bought them from a LFS and bought two of each black, white and silver. They said silver so don't really know if they mean silver laced, etc. I noticed on the threads people were talking about Giant Cochins and Bantam and I should have asked the LFS which type they were. THanks

Hi Dr. Rob,
Yeah, I would definitely start introducing black with the first pullet, the color looks good one the second one.
At first glance, the roo and pullet looked a little narrow across the back, but in the second picture, she looks fine.
Pictures can play tricks on you. Keep an eye on any stiff tail feathers, they should completely be covered by the
soft sickles, and the roosters tail should "waterfall" over them. Roosters sometimes take awhile to completely feather
in. You definitely have more time for them to develop. Mine changed dramatically at two years.

Bantam chicks are definitely smaller than standard chicks. I've got a picture of mine somewhere next to a HotWheels car. They're not much bigger than it is. If yours are the same size as other standards you've purchased before, they're most likely standards. I'll see if I can dig up that picture.
