I am now the owner of three gold laced bantam cochins! They are all three very tame and sweet. The lady had 5. Well after looking at the pics you posted here I was sure I could tell the roos from the pullets. Problem though...they all looked exactly the same on the back! I thought they were all hens (they might be, I don't know)

Then I remembered the hens seemed to be darker too so we had three picked out, I put one back for a darker one.
Came home and the poopy smell in the dog crate was not so good. My daugther was starting to rethink the whole chicken thing but we quickly added a bunch of pine shavings and food and water and sat down to watch the chickens.

They all have all their feathers grown in it seems (past gawkard stage) , she said they hatched New Years eve.
The one my dd picked out (Chicklet) is perfect, she has the prettiest feathers and tail. She seems to be the oldest and makes little hen noises to the others.

The one my son picked (Mrs. Sicily) is also nice, smaller and darker, she still peeps. She has some poop in one of her foot feathers that makes her lift her foot and shake it sometimes, we need to wash it out but seems ok. She is missing a toenail though.

The third, the one I switched for at the last minute...is not doing so hot. We thought it had poop in it's foot feathers or mud so we brought her in and gave her a bath. (They are all very tame btw) Soaked her feet mostly. THen took her out and blow dried her. She didn't freak out or anything.

Well after examing her after her bath...her one foot has two toes that just seem to be a blob of melded flesh with feathers coming out, red splotchy spots but no scabs and the worst seems to have healed. She is very skinny and doesn't have a whole lot of feathers on her belly or underside. She hobbles around and stands on one foot. She is the youngest (just barely any comb). She ate and drank, loved to snuggle on my lap. Moved around some but it wasn't easy for her. She picks at her bad foot some, she still has new feathers coming in on her foot and around her head. (Also has a bald spot on her head)

The lady said her ducks and turkies had been picking on them, that is why she was selling them. Also, they were already staying outside in a small dog house type thing. They are in the garage tonight in the extra large dog crate. It's heated to stay around 45-50. I have to finish the coop this weekend.

I feel bad for the one but am kicking myself for not examing her closer when I switched. Well, however long she lasts she will be pampered. I am thinking about giving her a beautiful name Gsa Gsa or Charo etc. Feel free to make suggestions. I wouldn't worry about her so much but she just seems to be very skinny. COuld her foot problem have been caused by frostbite?

I didn't have time to take any pics sorry, I will take some tomorrow after work. I will post the one's foot in the help section too.

Congrats on the new little ones! I hope Gsa Gsa/Charo improves soon. I'll bet she really appreciated the bath. It's hard to tell what's the matter without pics, but I'm sure with pics tomorrow of her foot you will get sound advice on how to help her along. You may want to keep her in the house with you for a while until she puts on more weight, feathers up some more, and her foot is healed to the point where she can stand on it.

Be sure and post those pics tomorrow!!
