Cochin Thread!!!

Update:

Today I had my gl cochins out in the garden. We gave them worms, they didn't know what to do with them. We pointed out spiders and ants, no go. But it seemed like they ate a pound of grit and sand each and had fun dust bathing.

I was using my soil blocker right by them so I can get some seeds started. I happened to pick the one up that is the picture I posted earlier and looked at her feet. She had something black on her ankle. At first I thought it was a feather but it wrapped around her foot. I picked at it and realized it was a rubber band that had grown into her foot! It was wrapped twice around her foot. I managed to get it off in one piece, it has grown in some and her foot bled but it came off. The other two both have one foot they have problems with, I checked them over but didn't see a rubber band but they both have big cankle like growths on one foot. Could their skin have grown over the rubber bands?? This must be why the other chickens foot was only hanging by a bit of flesh (the one I gave back!). The rubberband slowly cut it.

I am going to give them all a foot bath, anything I can add to the water to help them? Just a little bit of soap with the water or anything else?

This will be the first and last time I get grown chickens off craigslist. Ugh, I am just sick, those poor things. I emailed the woman to see what she had to say and to tell her to check the other remaining ones.

Maybe she banded them as chicks, but never took the bands off?? Those poor chickens

Hope you get it all figured out and don't have any more problems.

How terrible, maybe some epsom salt in the warm water? I haven't nursed too many chickens but lots of other animal including other type birds, better get the chicken EMTs in on this like the ones who do work on inpacted crops.
I'm hoping for the best for you and them.

I'm looking and needing the best Black Cochins that can be purchased. Not really looking for show birds as much as excellent old utility lines of Black Cochins, if there is any? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks :)

I am going to post in the medical section about the rubber bands on the foot, I have photos. One of the other birds had a band on it too and it was even deeper. I can't believe my dd and I managed to get it off it was so gross, but the thought of leaving it there was worse. I am sure the third one does too but i couldn't get to it tonight. By the time we soaked this one's foot and cut the band off and doctored it, went to walmart and got bandages and stuff it was late.

The lady emailed and was very apologetic and upset, she had bought them from another lady as chicks and they must have come with the rubber bands. Because of all the foot feathers and bands being black, she didn't see them. She offered me to take them back and return my money but now we are attached. Not sure what to do.

They sure have some nice type!

Thanks! I actually removed the broody hen from the chicks and returned her to the mottled pen. Mr Mottled was so excited to see one of his hens back. He was dancing all over the place.

Hey, girl! They are looking good! You are going to get some awesome chicks from this little flock. Can't wait to see how they are going to mature. Beautiful!

Call me a cynic, but I don't buy it, "she had bought them from another lady as chicks and they must have come with the rubber bands. Because of all the foot feathers and bands being black, she didn't see them." If she had them any period of time, she couldn't have cared very much to miss something like that. It sounds like she never picked them up to pet them or touch them affectionately, let alone check them over. My guess is she has animals to make money, and those folks rarely put the welfare of the animal first, the philosophy being that money spent on them cuts into to the profit and creates unnecessary overhead.
I don't know how much you paid for your girls, but if it was me, I'd keep the ones you already have and go back and get the rest.
Of course that's just me, I can't stand seeing someone abuse/neglect an animal.

If it's bad enough, it wouldn't be beyond me to report them to the local chapter of the SPCA or a humane society. The environment sounds disgusting and she sounds at the very least neglectful.
