Cochin Thread!!!

If you want to know the best way to do a Silkie go then check with Tgrlily I believe it is in the NY Forum - just ask! We were joking the other day that it was like a day at the Spa when the Silkies get done up!

Cute babies by the way! you are right BTW, I have also found that the larger the egg the more difficult and longer the hatch! My little Seabrights and SS Hamburgs, Nankins, Sumatras all just popped out! The others like the LF Cochins and BJ Giants all seemed to take their sweet time!

Still it is amazing to watch and I realized the other day that I actually have about 80 eggs in my incubators THIS time around I afraid to count any higher!

I have to say that chickens are just becoming more addiciting to me! Everytime I think I have it under control I see something else and I go, ooooooohhhhhh - I think I need to add a few to the flock!

I know what you mean about the LF's being slow pokes!! My Orpingtons hatched 2-3 days late..my bantams hatched a day early and popped out like crazy! Your STD eggs are just taking their sweet time, and making you wait as long as possible!

Isn't it cool to raise your own birds and their babies?! I have new babies also..feathering looks great. Hoping
that they will be a beautiful as their parents!

What is the easiest way to make an educated guess at the gender of 2 week old cochin babies??? I have 6 LF Partridge Cochin babies and they are starting to feather in , they are so cute!

I think one of my Bantam Splash Cochins is a Roo. He is about 4wks old. All of a sudden his comb and wattles pinked up. And he is the ONLY one....so thinking...ROO! He was also acting very dominant and male-like today...

here are some pics I tried to take while we are outside...

here you can see how pink his comb is (they were all napping inbetween my legs...all TWELVE of them!)

I will try to get some more tonight with help. But it wont be in natural lighting. Oh....he/she's name is "Blue" and he/she is turning out SOOO pretty! The splashing is just beautiful! and you should SEE the crazy fluffy feet!!!

If there are long tail feathers, it is a pullet. If the tail feathers are short, it is a cockerel. Easily distinguishable between the two when you compare short to long tail feathers. There was a post somewhere on BYC from a person with cochins who gave out this info and she said it was accurate. I am counting on it!!

I usually see that the primaries are longer on pullets and the back feathers on the pullets come in first. you can also tell a difference in the leg thickness of the cockerels, they are much thicker

Hello, I have Partridge Cochins (male in my Avatar), they have been pretty good layers in the past, but this year they are not laying much at all. Maybe it's just too early. I was wondering if anyone else is having this issue? Are they good layers for only about 2 years and then nothing?? what is the deal? I love them so much.

Yes, the primaries are longer in pullets. I failed to mention that. The leg thickness on my cockerels are much thicker than my pullets. Good observation cochincoop
