Cochin Thread!!!

Just a quick color/genetics question. I have a black mottle bantam breeding pen with well marked, and type birds of both sexes. From the final hatch last Fall, I got two oddly colored cockerels (see photo). They are closest to what I would expect for black pied. My question is tjhis the "pied gene" that is now considered part of the mottle gene or is something else? I'd consider breeding from them in either my black or blue mottle project(s) as they are pretty decent types, but I don't want to mix too much variation into the mix.

I knew they were not suitable for show birds (as their parents are), but was considering them for breeding programs. Specifically if they'd throw mottle correct or just more pied offspring. I'm moreinterested in their type rather than just color but don't want to create a line of pieds.

I wonder if another gene has been hiding in there and has now decided to express itself. It looks to me that ther is something else in there. Maybe breed brother to sister and see what you get but I would not put that back into the Mottled pen. It would be nice on Frizzles though.

If I can't find red or buff mottleds...how would I go about breeding for them? Get reds and buffs? Breed to my mottleds. Solid offspring split to mottle. Then do I breed those together or breed back to a black mottled or .........? To create the buff and red mottleds?

I am working on buff Mottleds but it is only in first stages. I am getting all colors popping out but also so nice buff Mottleds. I don't have a roo yet, as all have been girls and I am crossing my buffs that are from my MFC project back to my white roo.
I do not have any extra to sell as I am trying to keep all 16 girls I have for future work.

I have not incorporated any buff Mottleds into my Frizzle project yet either. That is another 2 years down the line for me, as my plan looks on paper.
