Cochin Thread!!!

lil..that is a great idea..even the extra cost of shipping would be worth it to have a co. that did just that..handle live animals! Someone should start a new co. Could make some money, and could save some lives!

BYC has an egg train - why not a train for live birds? What are the legalities for private parties to carry birds across state lines? For instance, if I'm going to drive from Denver to SLC (like I'd ever get to leave this place

), could I offer to transport a couple of birds for someone?

What a great idea lilcrow! I wish there was something like that!
I'm cleaning out all the brooders and I'm gonna get some picture of the cochins. I think I have a Quad Breeding Pair!

They are still rough looking. I can't wait till all their feathers come in!

ETA: Some of them still have pasty butt and I have been soaking their butts with a washcloth and gently pulling it off. I took pictures before I cleaned their butts.

I saved the best from this spring's hatch of Splash bantams for my breeding stock. What do you think of them? They are out of "Jack" and "Mae". I named Jack's son "Joe". Still need to pick names for the pullets. :

I think the train is an excellent idea. However, I can relate to the issue of getting away. I haven't left my place for well over a year for just that reason. How would we go about getting the train thing going? Mandy (Cochin Coop) and I were talking about the live animal company, and it would be a great idea, but can you imagine the liability involved and the bio-security?

I have seen a few people over on the Egg Train talk about transporting live birds, so maybe if you need to tranport a bird, you might check in with them. If a "Chicken Caravan" were started up, I think the issue of liability and bio-security would be an issue between the parties involved. But it's an interesting concept, because right now, you can really only ship in the spring and fall. So if we could fill in the winter and summer gaps, it would be nice.

I hatched shipped eggs and from the one group had 3 white splash hens, the darker hen (is it a lemon blue) and the rooster. He is getting more of the orange feathers daily. If I keep the hens for breeding can I use the rooster too or should I be looking for something else? These were hatched in March and are standard sized Cochins.

Just finished the 1st culling for this years Columbians. Sorted out the 1st 9 that were not finish growing up at my house. I think/know I have more for a 1st culling but they are just too young to know for sure(30 still in the brooders). Thought I had more smutty ones than I do and I had more too light ones than I realized. Also some too dark in the hackle(almost black) that had very good wing color. Hard to do but they were never going to be good enough to use in any breeding program.
