Cochin Thread!!!

I have a lot of chicks hatched out, from 1 day old to 3 months old. Splash, Mille Fleur (project), and some oddball colors from a secret color project I am working on. I need to find homes for the older ones to make room. But I can't ship unless we get a cool spell.

Ok, now I'm worried. I have 15 chicks on their way as of the 5th. It will be warm here, in the 90's. They told me that they had been doing well so far. I'm thinking I should write them..but it's a holiday! Pretty sure I won't hear back from them until it's too late. Now I will worry for the babies until they get here. I'm getting Partridge Rock and New Hampshires. I should have gone with my feeling..I wondered about the warm weather.

! Bad enough with eggs, but chicks - oh boy sooo sorry.

They finally showed up a day late. If I didn't go to the Main PO by morning when they would get to the local one they would have been dead. They were so sad looking.
And this was the SECOND time she sent them. The first time they were lost for 2 days and finally showed up and all were dead and starting to decay. That box smelled so bad!

The only four that made it. That picture was takein when I just put them in the brooder and they were SOO thristy.

Did she send them express?? I would have had fit if that happened to my chicks, and the problem a second time makes me wonder what "way" she sent them. If it was just regular ground it's no wonder they didn't make it. They MUST be sent EXPRESS. I've been told they won't ship them any other way than express. That's a real nightmare!
I'm so sorry for your little babies.

I am not allowed to ship anything out of here right now either.
Even if it was cool here they check the way the live birds will travel and the temps in between as well as the destination. It has to be much cooler than this for mine to leave out.
Not to mention I just hate shipping birds but have done it and will again. I just take all precautions as probably everyone does.

Wow, what a horror story. I'm so sorry for you and your babies. I haven't lost any yet, but I know the way the PO handles things, it's just pure luck. I'm going to be shipping a very large order to AZ in the middle to end of this month. The receiver says there is a rainy/cooler spell that comes around that time, so I'm hoping that will protect them. I'm so worried about this, all that needs to happen is for them to be delayed somewhere and they could end up sitting on the tarmac. That would seal their fate right there. I wish there was a company that handled JUST shipping live animals.

lil..that is a great idea..even the extra cost of shipping would be worth it to have a co. that did just that..handle live animals! Someone should start a new co. Could make some money, and could save some lives!

BYC has an egg train - why not a train for live birds? What are the legalities for private parties to carry birds across state lines? For instance, if I'm going to drive from Denver to SLC (like I'd ever get to leave this place

), could I offer to transport a couple of birds for someone?
