Cochin Thread!!!

Yesterday I finally thinned my flock a bit. That was hard. I sold them to someone who will eat them but takes good care of them before they do the deed.

However, I had one MFC roo left and I was loking at him because he had some high tail feathers. I put him with the ones that have to go and then took him back out. I thought well maybe I can try hatching some of his and see if it carries on. I looked at him some more and saw the vulture hocks which I hadnt noticed before. So off he went with the rest. So I am MFC roo-less now.

I dont think he would have improved any type wise either. He was a randy guy so hopefully my hens will be able to be more settled too now. So what I have is 2 blondish MFC pullets, 1 blk mottled pullet, and a MF pullet.

The Irish Wolfhound is very nice. I like big dogs but dont like their life span. Just too short.

I still have to sort through my silkies and black cochins. Those are the hardest. I hate to get rid of any of them. But I dont have room to keep all the roosters around and the hens will suffer too.

I feel your frustrations!! I am going through the same thing. It's sooo hard to cull when it comes to those two breeds! I have no issues culling my Orps, Marans, or Araucana's but, the silkies and bantam cochins are the hardest

I wish I could afford to keep them all and feed them all!!! But, I know it's not fair to them to look at it that way b/c I know there is no way I could give love to all of them equally.

They just like to take their time. There is really no definite answer to that that I know of.

Thank you Tiki and Elinor
Well DH is building a much larger coop for them and I'm painting it white inside I think that will help in our long grey winters here, sometimes we have deep dry snow, somtimes very cold. we are building a 4X8' coop with both a under coop run and extended run also. so they will be happy no matter if they lay or not.
