Cochin Thread!!!

and i keep meaning to ask... is anyone familiar with Ideal's chicks? i'm wondering what sort of quality they're likely to be.

they're both pullets, about 3 weeks old, and it's also curious that the black is taking forever to feather in while the white is already nearly fully feathered.

and that little silkie chick i got with the cochin chicks just HAS to be in every pic i take, and has adopted the oldest black chick (about 5 weeks) as 'momma' and is frequently seen sleeping on or under her... LOL

OMG WE GOT A BLACK COCHIN FROM IDEAL TOO AND SHE WAS JUST LIKE THAT! AND YOURS IN THE SAME, LOOKS LIKE A BLACK BUT LOOK, SHES STARTING TO GET A BIRCHEN COLORING

Steve, that's a great tip for pasty butt prevention. Did you notice that the chicks' overall waste was more solid? Did you only use the sand for the first couple of weeks that they are more prone to pasty butt, or longer?

NanaKat, I think you've got some great potential with those LF Splash Pullets. You might want to keep watch to see how their breasts develop - I'm already seeing signs of a "split breast" in the pullet on the left in the picture.

I've had Splash Bantams, but for some reason, I just love LF Splash. To my eye, the Splash color just seems to suit LF better than Bantams.

Does anyone else see Color Varieties that suit either Bantam or LF better?

Look ki4got in the top picture that little brownish chick on the right has a halo on her head. She must have been swivelling her head when you took the picture.

yeah lol those are the 2 i was hoping were buff columbian. the other one i think might be something else. it's got single comb but possibly ear muffs.

Cute chicks. I am going to post some pictures of one of my cockerels in my next post. I just spent 2 hours on this and lost the post. So this is mmy favorite one I think because of his tail and ballance? I hope some people can give me some feedback because I really don't know that much about the SOP. He had 4 points but over the winter he seems to have lost a point. I see some feathers look like they are coming out on his wing. Someone has been pulling some of his tail feathers too. I never saw that before so I think he is molting. He is about 4-5 months old. His name for now is cockerel number one Please be honest! I can take it. Thanks

I have 1 big, fluffy LF Buff hen that I just love. We call her Peaches. She is a character, loves the bantam girls but hates the little roos pestering her. Some of the younger bantam pullets tuck under her like chicks. She insists on stuffing herself in the bantam nest boxes. She has an exagerated "chicken" run that is so funny nto see but usually glides around like a big butterscotch cloud. I'm working on getting her a nice Buff boyfriend because we need more like her around.
