Cochin Thread!!!

Hello to everyone. Just wanted to say that while I do not yet have any cochins, I think they are beautiful birds. I have 5 coshin eggs in the incubator that are supposed to be blue and blue splashed, standard sized. I super excited and I hope they hatch. I got the eggs off of ebay so they were shipped. Wish them luck.

I just got my hatchery order last month and got a freebie who, I suspect, is a partridge cohin. IT is featehring slowly and is a lot whinier than my other chicks, and seems a little dumb. At present it is not my favorite, but maybe it will grow out of this- who knows!
I am totally new to the breed and I only have the one, so if ya'll could answer a few questions, that would be great!
1. Do they usually feather late?
2. When can you tell what gender they are?
3. As a freebie, I assume I was sent whatever the hatchery had extras of. I know cochins are classified as meat birds, but also people keep them as pets. What gender do you think they would send me?
4. If it is a roo, at what age would one send him to 'freezer camp'?
5. If I were to keep a roo around till he had his feathers all grown in, how long would that be?
Thanks!

Tough to tell alot from the photo, but the one thing I can tell you is that he is way over laced in the breast. That lacing should come down about half way on the front of the breast and stop. You won't find many Birchen males with correct lacing. Most are overlaced but the male in the photo is way over laced. Type is okay from what I can tell from the picture. Not great but okay.

For some reason, I thought that was hilarious. I got that song, "I like big butts..." playing in my head.

The rain finally let up here, so I was going to go take some new pictures of all the birds today.
The new Blue Mottled Cochins are settling in nicely - they're in their own pen, but I have one little Columbian cockerel that's very offended by the new addition - he puffs up and struts back and forth his pen and tries to crow (he's only 3 months old, so he sounds like a frog being squeezed) at the new rooster all day long.

Anyways, the whole reason I came here to post - at what age is it normal for the Bantam Cochin cockerels to start...mounting the pullets? I caught my two youngest birds (hatched mid-April) in the act the other night - I wasn't sure that's what they were doing, but I grabbed the little cockerel, and there's no question. I thought it was weird because I haven't seen the older group show any interest in breeding yet at all - and I didn't expect to see it for a month or so yet.

Cross posted to the "Wanted to Buy" section. I figured someone here might be able to help me out too.

I'm looking for Blue Cochin pullets/hens, any age would be great. I've got 4 grow out pens so I'm sure I could find a place for them somewhere.

I'll pay for shipping and the box if necessary, just really looking for a couple of these birds.

I'm in Oakland, CA. 94605.

Thanks!

So I can't find a thread for Frizzles. Probably because frizzles come in many different breeds. Anyways, I just got these guys/gals today. They are between 3-4 months old. They are frizzled and smooth bantam cochins.

I got them from a lady who is also NPIP and who shows white cochin bantams. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.
