Cochin Thread!!!

Hello everyone, I'm Skyler and I am new to chickens! We live in the middle of the Piney Woods in East Texas. We got our first chicks in April, then a few more in May, and more in May! Now we have all kinds of different breeds. We tried to buy from local breeders, but live in the middle of nowhere. We were able to buy from 2 different breeders in Texas, and we also tried Ideal since they are only about 2 hrs from here. This has all been an excellent learning experience! We built our first chicken coop and are still finishing it up now. Currently chicks are living in the house! Anyways, I hope I am in the right thread, I got a Silver Laced Cochin and Blue Cochin from Ideal, they are 3.5 weeks old today.

well your silkie cross is probably a splash. as for the 2 cochins you posted, sorry to say i don't think the black is a silver laced, but just a black. some of my best birds are blacks, which i didn't want when i started out. now i'm in love with em. 8)

and it looks like the blue has an extra toe too? that might explain the blue skin too, as a silkie cross possibly? but if they came from ideal i'm sure they're pure cochins...

here's a pic i posted a bit ago of my silver laced at around the same age... hen on the right roo on the left.

edit: this is a chick from that pair hatched yesterday. sold the pair already, but glad i got the laced chick, i miss them. LOL
all the silver laced chicks i've ever had were much lighter on the wings than the body.

Wow, I have no idea what I have then! Glad I posted them on here. My little blue girl (which has the best personality ever) had 4 toes. She has the 3, then the little tiny toe at the back, just like the other cochin in the photo. I think there is a little piece of shaving in the photo that looks like a toe ;) But her legs are very dark grey/blue where the feathers are coming from. I just looked at my ticket from ideal and it says "standard silver laced cochin pullet". I am sure that things get mixed up thou, because my silver laced doesn't look ANYTHING like yours. And now that I think about it, my gold laced polish look totally different that the silver laced patten on this black chick. I will take some pics of her wings for you in a few minutes and post. There area little specks of white in some of the feathers. Good grief! Who knows. Ha. THey are really nice little chicks either way. We are planning on showing them or breeding. More of learning experience!

Ok, So I got my supposed "silver laced cochin" out for more pics. Here are the pics I promised. The little girl wasn't too excited about showing off her wings ;) Hope these help. I have no idea what this is. There are little white streaks here and there on the shaft of her feathers. Then on the wings some look kinda painted or splashed??, but some are speckled with brown/beige too?? Let me know what you think! Any opinions are appreciated!

Here is the little white feather shaft things (sorry if my anatomy is incorrect)

Left wing with the splashed areas on feathers, then the inner feathers have brown speckled areas.

Slightly out of focus (my silkie was confusing the camera). Here you can see the little brown black speckled parts.

I have three new Cochin babies! =)
This is Speckles

And this is Pepper =)

And last, but not least is sweet little Sugar!

Now my question for anyone who may know is (I posted this in the intro thread, too), what type of Cochin are they? I bought them at a local feed store who simply called them "Cochin"... I have never had them before, and was little the last time my family had chickens at all, and so did not know about the difference between Bantam, Standard, Large Fowl, etc. I can tell you, though, that Speckles and Pepper (about five or six inches tall) are bigger than Sugar (who is maybe three or four inches tall at the moment) if that helps... =) Thank you!!

OMG!! You come up with the most wonderful projects.

I am raising around 40 plus black and blue chicks(seperated) and they seem drab compared to these. Lots of feed! yeah! Craig I love that pic of the little ones and the one columbian stands out with the sun shining on him! Nice!!!!!!!!!!

ki4got that is a pretty mama too even if it isnt a cochin!
thanks... and she got another added to the brood today. a late hatch from the barred rocks. talk about determination, he'd gotten stuck but was rocking around the incubator with 2/3 of the shell still stuck to his back/wings. cleaned him up and she immediately started preening him soon as i tried to sneak it in.
