Nice birds. Who owned the Black hen?

Hello, my sister and I are just getting into showing bantam cochins and where wondering what everyone did to condition their birds. Wether you use wire cages or woodchips!
We are going to be showing Goldenlaced, Brown Reds and Lemon blue/splash bantam Cochins.

Thanks, any advice would be great! :D

I think both can be used successfully. Do you have any pictures of your Golden laced.?

Yeah, I have pictures on my website which is on my profile! They are a work in progress. I started with one really nice hen and bred her to my birchen roo and hatched a pair out of them and just put 18 of their eggs under two broody hens. Cant wait for these chicks to hatch! Theyll be my first pure Goldenlaced chicks. We also hatched 2 lemon blue splash chicks and a lemon blue cochin chick today another on the way!!! :D

Geez, your little frizzle guy is looking very nice, in some ways more Birchen than ever, but then on closer inspection there's the penciling or at least I think it's penciling. Whatever it is, he's very pretty. Tell me again what your goal is, I've forgotten........sorry.

The little frizzle boy was a from a project to improve a line of black frizzles, he is good looking but going be culled next weekend. The other chick is from my main ambition to improve partridge, he is from a Partridge Cockerel X Black hen. I cant hatch out large numbers so will only be keeping one of the f1's to put back to my partridge cockerel. I have only seen 2 partridge of decent type here(and i own them both

), so i am trying to get a few faults cleared up with the cross to black, so i can produce more.

Although, i think the chicken gods want me to look into birchen, i am seeing them pop out from the strangest breedings.

I use both. Both have their advantages. Regular wire is hard on foot feathers. I use a 1 x 1 coated wire that keeps clean and has no sharp edges to catch feathers as my cage base. For the rest of the cage you can use 1 x 2 wire and join it using rabbit cage making materials. It is work but satisfying. I like the finer wood chips as they absorb better than the coarser ones. I use that for floor pens. I have a thread on the coop and building about what I have done. Check it out and contact me for more information if needed. https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/719671/new-building-for-my-birds
