Cochin Thread!!!

my sister liked all the chocolates so she took a small bite out of the bottom of each one so no one would eat them. would that work with chickens? my dogs want a taste or two or +all 70 of my chickies. p.s. does anyone have a recipe for breeding some chocolate cochins?

The main ingredient in Chocolate Cochins is the Chocolate Gene. You have to go shopping in the International section of the Wyandotte or Orpington stores to find it.

IMO, ALL cochins are sweet, regardless of the 'flavor'.

Here are some of my cochins! I am such a sucker for feathered feet!

This is my little Barred Cochin pullet, bantam. She still needs a name, but she is so sweet!

In this one, there is my Gold Laced cockeral, Bantam, His name is Golden Boy

This is my little Silver Laced cockeral, bantam. I am pretty sure he is a he, but not 100%. He has a big comb but his brother is REALLY red, this guy is barely pink.

And I saved the best for last! This is my main man, Boss. He is the biggest sweetie pie EVER! He calls me when he find some thing in the yard, picks it up and puts it in front of me! He is my far my favorite and as sweet as he is handsome. He is a standard Partridge Cochin.

All these pictures were just taken today!
This is my 'Free Exotic chick' that I got with my Murray order. People said it is a Partridge Cochin. I am thinking it is a roo, what do you think? If it is I hope he is as beautiful as yours.

Sorry my pictures are not very good. I will try to get close ups.

Ok I got a couple of better pics of my cochins. My partridge (?) likes to bite, but loves being held. Is that a hen thing? Do partridge roos start out looking like this? The older two are 6 weeks. The little guys are 3 weeks. The baby blues are standard size and very sweet. My black one is a kitten and follows me everywhere. I may need to rehome some roos if I have too many, so I could really use some input on sex from all of you experts. Please!! and Thanks you.

Cockerel above

Definitely a cockerel

See my guess in blue text above, the black is a boy, the Self Blue/ Blue looks to be a boy, but hard to tell for me if i had to guess i would say one blue boy and one blue girl.

Hope some more people pitch in and help you out. The partridge should be an easy one, due to the difference in feather colour between the males and female, but i dont know when that starts with them.

buff has dilution genes that inhibit the dark red, white masks all colors and can hide a multitude of other mutations, most of which you don't want in the reds.
worst case, a buff would be closer than anything else, but IMO not a good idea since you'd be generations getting back to the dark red color.

there ARE others breeding reds, so it would probably be in the best interest to get some stock from them to work with, rather than introducing other colors.
Thanks

AndyCap are you thinking that the partridge may be a pullet then? I hope the black one stays sweet. My nephew will be sad that he will have to change it's name from Olive to Oliver lol. I wouldn't mind having a male and female of each, I also have a wyandotte that may be a cockeral and three wyandotte pullets. Pretty sure anyway. Two brahma bantams too. Will the roos get along if I keep them all? They will free range on a half acre fenced in.

There is no doubt about it, that little partridge is a cockerel... Sorry. :(
