Cochin Thread!!!

I picked up my eggs from the breeder Thursday and she brought a TON of extras! I ordered a dozen, she said she bring extras...she brought 45! After weighing, candling, and dating, I now have 42 LF Cochins in the incubator. I am really hoping to have a good hatch rate but at the same time wondering what I'm going to do with that many chickens?!
keep the best, sell the rest. 8) or eat them. LOL

Here is a picture of my very first Buff Columbian chick 2 days old.

I have a few more in the hatcher due to hatch tomorrow.
I also have a few in the incubator. I have been getting eggs for a while but I sold them all because my incubator has been fulll of columbians and mottleds.

After reading all I could find and looking at umpteen photos my guess for my little brown chicks is partridge. The feathers are brown with gold stripes and each one is tipped with gold, the tail looks like it might come in darker. They all look like hens. 1 of the black and white is a hen and I think the sultan may be, my 3 little mixed babies with a japanese mom are hens. Could sex be influenced by perhaps weather? I know some reptiles eggs predominatly one sex or the other depending on weather. Last year out of five chicks I got 1 hen. I probably think too much.

If my guesses are all wrong don't hold back telling me so I want to shed my ignorence quickly.

Congratulations Tony!! I hope for a few to hatch out this week also. Keep it up.

So today is day 4 and I'm candling and documenting everything...we'll see how that goes. I think I have a couple with blood rings. Crossing my fingers there are no more.

Oh, quick question...most of these eggs are fairly porous. How can you tell if the egg is fertile and developing with porous spots all over it? And...are Cochin eggs usually porous or have I maybe gotten a bad batch?

I've heard that some folks believe that weather influences sex. I kinda' think that it might. I've had hatches where I've had almost all females, but I don't know why.
