Cochin Thread!!!

Thank you!  I love cochins.  I have not shown but hopefully In a year or two I can show and will have some good birds to show. 



 Yes, I know cochins  are very broody.   I guess what I should have said, was that I try very hard to break them.....  This one is especially Persistant I finally gave in to her.

Haha my hen is on 8 eggs right now. They are due next week.

I've always heard great things about how sweet cochin roos are? Has anyone ever had a mean cochin? I am re-homing my super-sweet EE roo in order to be able to keep this little cockerel... hoping I'm not making a mistake...everyone I showed pics too said definitely keep this guy!

What color would you call this bird? We have two 4 week old cochins that are this color, but I don't know what it is. Thanks in advance.

Your rooster and the Black hen are not full blood Cochin. The middle toe should be covered with feathers. The feet are the correct color...could be 75%.
The blue hen appears to be 100%.

If u were talking about mine, they are full Cochin. The middle toe is covered with feathers. It was rainy that day and their feet were somewhat wet and the Black hen was taking a step so only one foot was showing. Now the blue hen I didn't even have a front picture of but Ill be sure to check their toes either way.

lol send me a partridge roo, i'll be glad to share eggs. that's my problem. all the partridge eggs haven't done diddly (shipped). so all i have are the 2 girls. that's why they're in my mille fleur pen.

here's a pic of them with babies last summer (including the girl i posted earlier, i think).

Partridge is my favorite color! They blend in so well with my yard that they're nearly impossible to see - perfect camo haha Your ladies are beautiful. Unfortunately, I don't have a partridge roo either. I had one that when bred to my partridge hen threw a partridge baby but he has since passed away and the baby was a hen. Partridge seems to be the elusive color, with BBS and wild colors more popular, at least that I've found.

My thought is the grass will not hold up because the Poo burns plants if used a fertilizer if it has not been composted for at least a year. Hope I am wrong.

well at the moment I go and water in all the poop or i pick it up each day...It is pretty easy to pick up off the grass as it is mostly solid...I am still watering the grass each night to see if it will take and grow...one week down and it is still there...

I wonder if cleaning it up daily will help it last. It shouldn't be that hard to replace it every couple of months though. Doesn't sound too costly. Has anyone tried moss? Or another type of ground cover plant?

yes thats what I thought...if I have to replace over summer so be it...but I love that all my girls get to have grass...

Crap, that's the same problem I'm having. :/

I swear my splash trio have been broody all of April and they are still broody? it can't be good for them...I do throw them out each afternoon when i get home and lock them out till bedtime...I won some blue mottled eggs from the cochins FB page so they will have to do for the time being....at least i will get some new babies soon...

Cochin roosters are so sweet and so pretty too. Here's a pic of Mr. Rocky he is the most compassionate rooster I have ever met. He roosts with my Cochin hen that is a little "off" she can't figure out how to roost on the tall roosts, so rocky snuggles up with her instead of with the rest of his hens so she won't be attacked (they are locked up safe and sound at night but they are chickens and don't know that I guess) or have to spend the night alone. He is friendly with everyone but also a fierce defender of his ladies when and if danger presents itself.

He didn't want to hold still in these pics...to many bugs to eat out there I guess.





My Marans roo (Blue) got out of his pen and they got in a fight before I could catch him so that's why Rocky's comb has that mark on it in these pics. Blue is the only chicken that ever gets out and he does it all the time, I have no idea how he gets out of a covered run but somehow he does. He must really want to get his butt kicked because he never gets any of the Cochin hens he always gets chased off or beat up by Rocky before he can. (I don't hatch the Cochin eggs so even if he did get one its not a big deal though).

He/she is a blue cochin.
