Cochin Thread!!!

Most of my hens eggs have hatched but one hatched with its brain outside of its head.

So is that just an accident that happens sometime or is it something that would pull one or both parents from breeding?

I'm no Cochin expert (yet ) having just got my first LF Cochins, but she looks very nice to me. I'm partial to Buff myself, having just bought 2 Buff hens and some Buff Barred hens and rooster.

When I got my buffs, it was more of a last minute choice - I wanted more Cochin bantams, but frizzles. I was supposed to get HRIR bantams but the order got misplaced so I ended up with 4 buff Cochin bantams.

What do you guys use to vaccinate for fowl pox? I can't seem to find a name for the vaccination. Maybe I'm not looking at the right places?
I'm pretty sure my Cochin has caught this darn virus, unless there's another disease with the same type of dried scab on the wattles. Can't see any of the scabbing on my hen, but she barely lays eggs, so I'm thinking she also has the same virus.
If I got the right information on the internet, I should not vaccinate them when they are carrying the virus. I should just let it run it's course. I'm thinking I should vaccinate after all symptoms are gone? Or will it really make a difference if the bird will be immune after the outbreak?

Just to let y'all all know the rest of her eggs hatched perfectly fine! The poor guy did get out of the nest and into the water and drowned. I buried it last night. I'm just glad it's over with.

I have five hens, one is a Cochin. A friend has a baby Cochin that might be a boy. If so, she can't keep him in the city, and has offered him to me. I have had bad roos and do not want another. How are Cochin roosters, in your experience, temperament wise?

Usually they are great. It mainly depends on the parents and how it was raised.

Im hoping to use my standard size partridge cochins as foster mothers for other chickens turckeys guineas and pea fowl what are your thoughts a experiances

Hey. One of my girls had this earlier in the year. The vet i took her told told me the following.

Because pox can be spread by mosquitos or bugs, i should isolate her. She went in a run enclosed in mosquito netting for at least four or five weeks, until the swelling was completely gone. There are two types of pox we get here, the external "dry" variety which causes puffy eyes and swelling. This can be left to run its course, the chicken will get some immunity to it, but should still be vaccinated next season.

The second type he described as "wet" pox which is a lot more dangerous and can cause the throat to swell and restrict breathing. this has to be treated apparently.

As i said, this is just the information i got from my vet.He says the only way to vaccinate here is to make a small incision on the birds leg and rub the vaccine into the cut.

He said i should vaccinate by birds once per season, after the first heavy rains.

If there is any easier way to do it then please let me know!

Generally quite good temperament. I have 1 mean one out of 20 Cocks and Cockerels. He is gone when I find the right place for him
