Cochin Thread!!!

Abby, 6 or 7 weeks

Hello, fellow Cochin lovers!

We are still really new to the world of chickens, and I was wondering if you could lend your expertise on one of our newest flock members. This chick was purchased from the bantam bin, but I think he/she might be standard sized. What color would you consider it, and (most importantly) is this a rooster? I am SO hoping not, because this little thing is the sweetest in the bunch!!! And going forward, is there anything that will help me pick out the girls easier when I am looking in the bins at the feed store? I know combs and wattles are the best indicators, but at a week old that's not always possible!

Thanks in advance!!! :)

Abby, the day we broght her home. I'm guessing about a week here?
My opinion is you have a Pullet there. Perhaps a Blue.

I don't know what a paint is. It is not a recognized pattern/color/variety for Cochins of that I am 100% positive. Splash is the result of breeding Blues, Blues and Splash, or Slash. The president of Cochin International lives in Michigan and raises LF Cochins in Blue, Black and Barred. Contact information can be found http://www.cochinsint.com/officers--directors.html
Thanks . Maybe the paint is a breed thing. I've just started noticing its use, but that doesn't mean it hasn't been around forever..

If my cochin chicks are about 8-9 weeks old and half the size of an adult silkie hen, are they bantam or standard?

Thanks ahead of time for any answers. :)

Howdy! I have my first buff cochin (at least that's what I've been assuming it is all this time). She is 13 weeks old now. I took this picture today and would love a little feedback. Bought her from a bin at the local farm store, so I know she isn't show quality... (She won't be loved any less because of it though!) I don't know if I will ever get into breeding or showing, but I do want to increase my knowledge. From reading many posts in this thread, I'm guessing that she should have more feathers on her toes. Should she be lighter in color? What is ideal eye color etc? Thanks!

These are my girls Midnight on the left and Sophie on the right. Sophie just had her 7th birthday this year! Midnight had her 5th birthday this year too. They are both Black Cochins. Sophie is an animal lover if that possible for an animal to be. She LOVES to take rides around the horse pen on our donkeys Wishful and Graceful. Midnight is more the sit in a nest or act like a rooster when the rooster is gone kinda hen. She is getting crabbier as she ages, as Sophie is the opposite. I swear she gets sweeter everyday.

Wow, 5 and 7 years is mighty impressive, congrats! What lovely girls. How long did they keep laying for?

She looks more red than buff to me.

She isn't a show bird, but if you love her, that's what counts :)

Oh, interesting! The breeds were all mixed together in the cage that she came from, and I did see on the label that there were buff cochins in there somewhere...I don't think red was even an option. But who knows... I ended up with an Australorp rooster as well that was supposed to be female.
