Cochin Thread!!!

ok I've got 2 roos i'd like to share pics of... both boys are moulting a bit tho, so have a few gaps here and there...

the first one was the only to hatch from some shipped eggs, the silver laced. got some girls with poor lacing, but better than none at all I guess, to put him with.
he's a pita but gets to stay only because of what he is, until I can get a better roo. he's not mean or anything, just likes to harass all the girls all the time. lol



the next 2 are kepiru. a product of my own mille fleur breeding efforts.
I REALLY like this boy. so far the best roo I've grown out from that pen.




I should also mention, both boys are this years' hatches, so about 5-6 months old...

Yipes! Karen! If you let go of that Silver Laced be careful where he goes.....please......

this is what frizzle feathering looks like. This was a self blue barred at about 1 week. You can see the feathers already are different.

at 1.5 weeks a bit more obvious


and by now you know it's frizzled

OH! Andy!! That is a lovely chick, do you have pics as an adult? or is it grown yet. I'm surprised that the barring is so clearly seen. I would have thought that the color combination you described would have just been lost in the soft frizzled feathers, but not so.......beautiful!

lucky me! I ordered meat chickens from McMurrray and filled in five cochins to make 15. Well ok I ordered five cochins and filled in with the meat chickens. Closer to the truth! Love my cochins! My oldest are about 9 weeks.

i've got some hatchery gold laced, and this is what I've got developing at 5-6 weeks old or so...




my own breeding, this guy's a blue laced red (actually going to be black laced i think but will go with a splash hen) this guy's closer to 8 weeks.
Junior and Senior actually... Senior isn't my own breeding but I was lucky to find him.


then we have my silver laced cochin roo, hatched in December, and some pullets hatched about 10 weeks ago... the pullets have poor lacing IMO, even tho they came from the same breeder as the roo. but it's what I've got to start with so...

edited to add, her lacing is coming in better with the moult of more adult feathers! so i'm much happier about this girl.




pullets 2 & 3 - very poor lacing. incomplete at best... same with the roo at the end.
think I like 2 better than 3, but i'll put them to the roo and see what we get...

I don't think any of the last 3 will develop with better lacing as they mature.

Ok, so I am thinking about getting some SQ cochin bantams... have some questions on their genetics though.

I LOVE both columian and white... what happens when u mix those two colors?
I also like birchens. Do they mix well with other colors (such as black or brown red)?
Also, has anybody tried crossingna white standard cochin hens (I have 2 of those already) to a silver campine roo? I'm guessing a silver barred (like the campine) with fluffy feathers and feathered legs... I don't understand the chicken color calculator.

Ok, so I am thinking about getting some SQ cochin bantams... have some questions on their genetics though.

If you cross white and Columbian you get washed out Columbian. Certainly not SQ Columbians. Let me know where you will get SQ Columbians. Birchens breed to birchens or you loose the patterns. I have heard about the chicken calculator for years and think you will get the best advice asking breeders that have done it rather than trusting the Chicken calculator. You don't always know what is hidden in a pattern.

crossing colors gets you nothing easily predictable since, as I've said before, so many different mutations can be hidden by other ones...

good luck finding sq birds. if you start talking about mixing colors and/or breeds, many breeders may not even be willing to sell since good quality birds are scarce in so many different color varieties. white, black, mottled, they seem to be the most common. the rest? nope.

like my dorkings. if someone wants to mix and match or cross breed, all they're likely to get from me are the culls. which will not be sq...

Ok, I don't just plan to get these birds to play around with colors... I actually show other breeds and enjoy just doing that... its just one of those things where you start thinking "I wonder what happens when you...?"

i bought 2 roos & 2 hens at a sale today. These are my first cochin bantams i believe they are buff. i have a few ?'s about trying to get these guys back into good shape. these guys feet are horrible. i want to bath them but don't know how to go about it. I'm guessing they were caged birds their toe nails are really long can or should they be clipped? there feet and legs are red and irritated i treated them with meds for scaly legs. i added some antibiotics to there water as well. the roos feet are their major problem. The hens look as though they were just left with the roos ALL the time they have very few feathers left on their backs or feet. im thinking just seperate the girls to give them a chance to recover. i do want to breed these guys towards the first of the year but that will depend on wether i can get them in good healthy shape again. i think with time,good feed and some meds they could be pretty birds.
I think this has turned into a rescue mission....

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated...
