Cochin Thread!!!

Just wanted to join the thread we just hatched some cochins we have full size buff, lavender, and some mixed colored cochin chicks and also have some silver laced bantam cochins due here shortly as well! We're very excited to have them the chicks are beautiful!

ok...  if you say so...  but the best quality barring will be on a rooster with 2 copies of the gene IMO.  you're the first I've ever heard say you need to cross out to black.

oh no i didnt mean you had to use a single gened one the best result would be from a doubled gened roo and black hens but this is for silkies so it may be different for cochins

I think moomoodiddy is referring to the double dose effect of the barring gene, making the males who carry two copies lighter. As far as i know two copies dilutes both eumelanin and pheomelanin leading to a lighter male carrying two copies. The best barring needs slow feathering, like the plymouth rock. (i have heard people also saying a single copy of Co helps, not sure about that though) Cuckoo then, as a phenotype, would be barring with fast feathering, Barred would be barring with slow feathering. i suppose crossing out to black would sex link the offspring, and given that the male would carry one copy would have darker/ more distinct barring then a male carrying two copies. i think this is what i was trying to say. thank you im not an expert so the birds with ligher barring have two copies

What beautiful chickens! These definitely look like girls, but it's always hard to be sure. We got a batch of cochin bantam chicks in April and I wanted to know so bad whether they were girls or guys. Some of them that we thought were boys turned out to be girls and vice versa. One key indicator, in my opinion, is aggressiveness. The boys started showing signs of aggression towards the other birds and me at an earlier age. Have fun with your chickens!
