Cochin Thread!!!

Had two broodie girls who tried setting in the heat wave we were having so I took their eggs in the evening and replaced them with 15 4 day old and week old chicks. Both hens took to the chicks like a duck to water. Delilah is a seasoned mother and Joy is a first timer. She is the one all fluffed up on the left. Everybody is happy! The chicks include LF BBS Cochin and Columbian Wyandotte.

Started the task of sorting this years birds today.

1st picture is of a pen of Silver Penciled Bantams. Most still need to grow more before much sorting can happen. I will have some pairs available for sale towards fall.

the 2nd picture is a pen of Blacks with a Frizzle hen in there to keep order. Also GL, SL males, and Partridge in there. Like the other pen sorting will start soon for foot color and DQ defects. All of my Columbians are too young to do anything with except feed them.

Where did you get yours from?

I bred and hatched all of the young birds you see and many more this year.

My original Silver Penciled were a gift from Annamay Carlson who thought I needed a pair. I found out I loved them.

My original Partridge came from Matt McCammon

My GL breeding trio is from Mandy Malin (male)and Annmay Carlson (pullets)

My SL are also from Annamay Carlson.

My Blacks are 3 separate lines. Mark Peterson, Tom Roebuck, Joe Mazur. All bred to the proper corresponding hen

My Frizzle came from Casey Gentry. He used her as a brood hen last year. I have a few of her chicks around here too.

Hi Craig, i would love to see the pics and hear your thoughts on your Columbians when they are a bit older.

I have found lady who showed Columbians in a rare breeds show in South Africa, but she is a 12 hour drive from where i am, and i am trying to learn as much as i can about them in various stages of growth before i make my long journey to pick some up. (even getting some help from light sussex breeders)

Great to see a lot of the less common varieties being hatched out. Your SP look great. I know Gail was making good progress on the gold laced, good to know someone else is also working on them.

Your "Black roo" is a Blue Cockerel. You can breed him to a Black. I won't comment on whether you should because I don't know what it is you want out of such a breeding. Chart that follows gives the likely results of such breeding.
Blue to Blue = 50% Blue, 25% Splash, 25% Black
Splash to Blue = 50% Blue, 50% Splash
Splash to Black = 100% Blue
Splash to Splash = 100% Splash
Blue to Black = 50% Blue, 50% Black
Black to Black = 100% Black

I showed a picture of a young pen I am going to sort through. I may only get 1 quality bird out of that pen when I am done or it could be 10. Only time will let me know which it is. That will take several more months. I have sorted out several already for non straight combs and feet that are not bright yellow on the bottom. None are old enough to have had eye color change yet. Sorting for eye color and wings will come later.

He is about 5 months old. He has a good bit of growth left in him. Do you think he will be ok for a 4-H show?
