Cochin Thread!!!

I'm curious - is there a cochin thread for people who just enjoy their cochin chickens for their personalities and as pets, but aren't raising show quality/breeding quality birds?

I love cochin chickens, but I just can't relate to any of the posts in this thread, as they are mostly for/about/relating to showing/breeding birds. Trust me - I'm all about that!  It's people like all of you who have given me great quality stock (thanks, y'all!), but I'm really just a happy chicken owner who wants to share my chickens' stories, pictures and interesting characters with other people who have tiny backyard flocks.

Let me know, and thanks again!

:woot

I believe this thread is for both. You are more then welcome to share pics of your flock. Mine are not show quality but I still like posting pics and sharing stories. If you want a critique then people will give them to you.

Just my thoughts. If I am wrong then shout, I have thick skin ;)

Andy, I disagree with you about having SQ birds; I think some of yours are or may be appropriate for the show halls.

ok I need a suggestion... I have a partridge girl, nice type, markings are a bit mossy but not bad... problem is I have no partridge roos.

debating what to do with her. LOL I've got red, silver laced, mille fleur and mottled pens, and extra blue-buff Columbian boys... so do I hang onto her in the hopes of a partridge roo, or sell her off? her personality is very timid so she does not do well free ranging and all my 'extra eggers' are the free range bunch.

I contemplated starting a blue laced red project, and she could do that with one of my blue Columbian boys, but not sure if I really want to get that started right off or get my silver laced birds better first.

what made this all come to a head was finding an egg in my mottled pen, where she is currently residing. I decided that was not a good pen to keep her in, if i'm to work on my mottled birds. I've got my reds and silver laced together right now, only because they're all 4 month old pullets and aren't laying yet., but that pen is a bit crowded to add her...

or I could make her the 'den mother' and put her in with the 6-8 week old chicks and let her mother them...

or else I look for a partridge roo and another hen at the big swap coming up, and build yet another pen for them.

chicken math strikes once again.

Ahh, that's a hard decision. I say go with what your heart tells you. :)

Does your hen actually like generic chicks. Most of my hens and ones I've know are pretty hateful with chicks unless they're her own. I have much better luck putting a rooster in with the chicks if I need/want a baby sitter.
