Cochin Thread!!!

I took the plastic egg out. She wasn't happy about it. :p She is such a good girl I can reach right in and pick her up with out too much fuss. It is pretty much impossible to keep her out of the boxes, as my other 8 hens use them to lay everyday. Unless I bring her in the house or put her in the silkie coop. She has been with my blue pair of silkies before, but its been a couple months. She hasn't been with the other silkie girls. She isn't aggressive at all. She may do okay with them. I would rather not have to take her out and have her have to re-establish herself into the flock later. I am afraid if I leave her to brood without eggs, she might brood for too long. With eggs it will just be for the 21 days, if she stops early I have an incubator, or I can bring the chicks inside after hatch if I have too. I would rather her not be broody, but I just don't know how I can break her with my setup right now. Its my fault I didnt anticipate a broody so soon.

Build a small wire mesh run, takes about half an hour. Put her in there for 2-3 days with food and water. generally being away from their "nest" will hlp breaking them.

If you are determined to let her hatch then can you not buy her a day old chick from somewhere close and put it under her at night? Once again a separate run will be ideal for this.

Good luck, i know what you are going through, i had one broody on friday, and now have four thanks to a hot weekend.

for that matter, I've given broodies chicks up to a week old in the middle of the night, and just make sure there's food and water available to the chick the next morning since momma may not wander for a day or so after the chick is given. some like to get to know the kids before they take them for a walk.

I went out this morning , a bit late, so they were all up and around, and she was on the roost with the others. She slept in the box last night. She went out for scratch and explored a little with everyone. I went out a half hour later and she was in the box again. She is a stinker. I don't have access to chicks, but I do have fertile eggs coming out the ears, so I may just stick a couple under her and keep a close eye on her. She still hangs with the flock a bit when she comes out, so I don't think I will separate her yet. The barn isn't with-in visual of the coop, and I don't want to freak her out. AndyCap, I really hope her broodiness isn't contagious lol! I have a large fowl cochin roo, wyandotte roo, 3 wyandotte hens, a minorca, an EE, an australorp, and 2 RIR hens in the coop with her. so 11 total large fowl in the coop. They free range on a fenced half acre with our alpacas, so I'm not sure I want her hatching chicks in that environment, but I feel like re-integrating her and the babies into the flock later may be worse if I separate her. Im a newbie. I really don't have a way to break her here, and If she wants to be a momma, I will let her try. I have an incubator in an emergency. If she's gonna brood, I may as well let her do it with purpose.

Maybe it's just this year for some reason. lol Or the weather. My girl waits for the other hens to lay, and then sits on their eggs. She isn't even making an effort. Lazy I tell ya.
