Cochin Thread!!!

If I had the slightest idea how to go about starting the project I would be happy to; It'd be exciting and worthwhile. My rooster is not from my Mille Fleur pen, he's from another breeder's Reds.
My intention earlier this year was to cross him with a good Black because I had read an article on cochins int on Reds, and I started the year with a nice pair of Buffs that I had high hopes for... but it was one of those things that I didn't get to, and I lost the Buffs... I've mostly been busy building and rebuilding and preparing for this coming winter.
But I already have an area perimeter -fenced for next Spring, waiting for me to get out there and build more pens.

My reds are sold out for now. I have 36 in the barn and plan to keep showing and breeding them.

I have never been in contact with Annamay, but probably she would be a good source for everyone who is in the Midwest. Plus she is very well known compared to me.

I ship all the time without any problem. We're not just a bunch of lumberjacks stumbling around in the woods, you know :)

I do have some black tailed and I'll see what I can produce from them.....

I tried getting your attention many times about some reds. I have a black tailed buff looking girl (I say that because genetically I don't know what she is) and wanted to get a red boy off you to see if I could get some black tailed reds. I don't have the space to do so now. Oh well!

I think what Nancy was saying is that shipping is a pain in the butt!!! I shipped out 4 boxes of birds today and undercharged myself $31... which of course has to be paid at the PO then when you drop them off.. plus it takes me all day long to get the boxes and birds ready. I don't know why but it always seems to work out that way, when I ship birds out it's an all-day endeavor. & then you sit back and worry about them until the get to their destination safe and sound, and you pray the receiver is happy with them!

She's still got a little ways to grow on her feathers around her tail since the attack. Her stomach is gaining some feathers. Her chest feathers aren't drying right. I didn't get to wash them that good though.

Yes that is what I was saying and relate completely to your recount of shipping. I do it but don't like it. I've also undercharged for shipping and end up losing money.

Ugh sorry your day didnt work out smoothly. I hope it helps a bit to know that there are many many of us newbies that appreciate all your effort and all the others that ship too for helping us get our starts with new lovies. Not that i have much of a fingernail to begin with but when somethings in transit i alway seem to shred what little finger nails i have to almost nothing

Nancy,

I hear ya loud & clear. I shipped birds yesterday to New Hampshire but the scenario is mind boggling.

Sale: Made the sale in early Aug. but weather was too hot to ship.

Payment: Received payment for the 3 LF Cochin in mid-Aug. The shipping cost was based on the size (box) & weight of the 3 birds in Aug.

Shipment: Shipment was scheduled for Monday Sept. 23rd. I called expedited services early Monday morning to reconfirm all was a go for shipping to "MAINE"~! I was then told that the zip code area that I used to be able to ship to had changed. Now they didn't accept "live" shipments at that zip code :(

Panic Time: Called my customer. Fortunately she is visiting her Mom in NH this weekend so I re-scheduled the shipment for NH.

2nd Problem: Since it had been almost 2 months since the initial sale, the birds had "grown". Now the $20 Horizon box wouldn't fit & I had to use the Ex-Lg $35 box. Also they had gained weight so the price I had quoted on shipping was now higher.

End Result: It cost me (out of pocket) an additional $25 to get the birds to their destination.

Stressfull...you betcha. Now I'm just waiting (nail biting) to see if they arrive tomorrow without incident.

Nancy did you know you can print your own Express Labels online saving you 35-40%? If you'd like me to walk you through it, just let me know :)

Lynn, everyone of those issues I can completely relate to, and I knew the PO was doing some restructuring so that shipping live birds was going to be different. It seems like much less service offered and much more expensive for what you get. I don't know which Nancy you are addressing this to, but I'm going to guess that it doesn't matter. You have always been so open and helpful that I'm thinking you would help either one of us with the printed out labels. I didn't know there was that much savings in doing that, but it sure makes it worth the effort. I'll be shipping some birds to Washington state coming up maybe next month or so, so I may give you a nudge when the shipping date is set.
I would have come unglued if I showed up at the PO and couldn't ship to my location because of the new regulations. I know how much shipping you do and if there is a way to reduce expense and hassle you will know it. Thanks for this information Lynn, it will help a lot.
