Cochin Thread!!!

Hello everybody! Have been somewhat of a silent lurker, and a total fanatic of my sweet, sweet silver laced cochin hen. Now we've recently added another, this time a straight run buff. Both bantams. I think the buff is a cockerel. Question is, if these two mated, what would their offspring be?

Possible male buff and definite silver laced female. Thank you!

Please don't breed a Silver Laced to a Buff. Silver Laced is much to rare to mess it up with anything but another Silver Laced, and you wouldn't get anything good from that breeding anyway.

I just bought my first Cochin rooster!! I Thot he was just gorgeous and I am hoping my lonely little frizzle will take a liking to him. I've heard that would be a nice pair? I'm not sure how I would do that other than locking them in the same pin together? Any advice is much appreciated!! Thanks!!

Your new rooster is gorgeous, a great purchase for a first Cochin. Most people don't do so well in the beginning. Cute little hen also. My question is, why breed a White to a Black? You won't get anything good as far as color is concerned. It would be ideal if you could pick up a white hen and a Black rooster (should be pretty easy to do with those colors). I'm not much of a frizzle person, but I will have to say the prettiest friz. I've ever seen are White. They look like little powder puffs.
Again, your rooster is beautiful. Congratulations!

nothing predictable, identifiable or usable most likely. you'd produce some colorful egg layers and that's about all.

please don't 'waste' the silver laced on a buff...

Anybody in North Texas that raises Cochins want to add another rooster to your flock? I love my little guy and want to make sure he has a good home but he's clumsy with the ladies. He is in good health, born in Feb 2013. Acquired from Murray. Interested? please let me know. Pics on my profile.

wow! See I don't know anything about breeding, just know I've been getting some fertile eggs, so I didn't know what would happen if those two hooked up. Wouldn't it make buff laced like with polish?

No, it is impossible to breed two birds that sort of make sense and think that you'll get a combination of the two looks. Poultry genetics is so incredibly complex that even people who study it for years still have some difficulty getting what they want. To breed a combination of colors/patterns you need to have a goal in mind and do a lot of research before hand. You can always hatch the eggs that you have, but don't expect anything but an odd outcome from the eggs.
