Cochin Thread!!!

Thank you! =)
Yes, they are sweethearts! I'd like a roo, but IDK where to get one. Also, I just started keeping chickens at all this year and ended up with Snoodle quite unexpectedly. But once I get things figured out a bit better about keeping chickens in general, then I'll start working on being able to breed her specifically to a Bantam Cochin roo (hopefully frizzled too, but we'll see). Maybe I'll check the feed store next spring where I got her from this spring. We'll see. IDK if I can get DH to buy me one on purpose. lol
You need to breed frizzle to a smooth feathered bird. Otherwise you can end up with a poor feathered bird that has broken feathers all the time and they fall out quite often -poor things look quite pitiful. Snoodle is beautiful and you want to have beautiful babies if you breed her.

Hello!
There are so many GORGEOUS birds on this thread!
I had a few questions about Partridge Cochins, and was hoping that some of you who really knew Cochins could share some insight. We have a sweet, fluffy and mellow,19 week old standard sized Partridge Cochin cockerel with very fluffy feet (but they are full of mud here. lol) who seems to be turning into a handsome fellow. His coloring is a soft black (vs.being dark black), with a scarlet head, iridescent purple/ teal and blue laced feathers around the chest, wings. Burgundy and blue across wings and blue and red saddle laced feathers. His tail seems nice and full. He runs like I think a T-Rex would run. lol

My question is, is this fellow worth finding some pretty hens and breeding him? I have some health concerns, so I must be selective about spending my time and efforts. Not trying to put the cart in front of the horse, but are these as a subbreed desirable? And what would eggs typically run if you were to sell fertilized eggs? Do they have brown eggs or white? Your thoughts and input are highly appreciated. Many thanks and have a Happy Thanksgiving!

He has a lot more time to grow, and grow, and grow. LF Cochins mature very slowly. Take your time, he will be growing for at least a year.

Dh's Mom drove up from Texas last night and today we are cooking and taking it across the street to Jack's -

smoked turkey
Mashed potatoes and turkey gravy
cajun dressing with andouie sausage
peas
squash - kabocha,its the sweetest
roast cauliflower
pumpkin pie
pecan pie

What is everybody else eating today?

Edit- I posted this on the wrong thread - On the OKie thread everybody knows that I am a neighbor of a long time member of the chicken community, Jack - He is the one to get me interested in raising chickens. He is a parapalegic and had me help sort baby chicks coming out of the hatcher. All of those little fuzzy babies, averaging 100 a week, got me hooked. Jack raises Welsummers, Marans, Blue Ameraucanas and RIRs. BYC is where I researched and chose Cochins.
Jack also repairs incubators and hatchers. I am getting a nice sportsman for this Spring - can't wait!
