I still am trying to figure out how many I take and how many I scratch for going out of condition since entries sent in. I might scratch 1/3 of what I entered.

Hi, I haven't been on this thread in a while. I have been enjoying looking at everyone's beautiful birds! I attended my very first show this past Saturday. I entered a Mottled Cock and a Mottled Hen. I had a great time, but I was a bit disappointed that there were so few cochins at the show. There were around 1200 birds entered at the show and there were about 12 or 15 bantam cochins at the show. I had hoped more cochins would be there! There were lots and lots of Silkies, Japanese Bantams and Old English. I also noticed that there was a fairly good turnout for the youth entries. There were several other breeds there as well.
Is there a reason why cochins were not well represented?

It takes commitment and time to show Cochins with the washing at this time of year. I entered 18 for our show last weekend and only had13 show due to condition problems. I have 31 entered for ABA National at Knoxville and am scratching almost 1/3 of those for condition issues. Some are molting and some just never got to where I thought they would when I sent in the entries.

Hi! Thanks so much! I bet there were not 15 total cochins at that show! I hope to be able to have about 15 ready for the spring show. I have a lot to learn, but I have studied the Cochin Standard and have been breeding my birds to reach those goals. I am starting to make some real progress on my type and color patterns in the "Baby Dolls". I wish I had started with a solid color in that project, but hind sight is 20/20 and I have really made some progress in the last year. I plan on showing Mottled and Black Cochins at future shows.

How did you do at the show? I saw the photos of your new barn for your chickens! Very nice! You have some spoiled birdies.
I entered one Mottled Cock and on Mottled Hen. They were in great condition and I was really happy with how they looked. I also noticed that the Cochin cock that got Best of Breed was way over the weight limit. In rabbits, they will disqualify any rabbit over the weight limit. Apparently that is not the same in poultry.

I show rabbits, so I know all too well about having to scratch an entry! I actually sold all of my Fuzzy Lops a few years ago because they were impossible to keep a good coat on. Whe they molt, they molt all the way to the skin and they look terrible. They are not a good breed to raise in the South unless you can keep them in a climate controlled area. Raising Fuzzy Lops will give you a nervous breakdown.

Everybodys birds are so pretty, and mine are going through their molt still and look terrible. Blueberry finally got his hackles back though. He was a naked neck for awhile.
