Cochin Thread!!!

I use a child's soft "My Littlest Pet Shop" toothbrush for my cochin's faces. Every time my daughter goes to the dentist she gets another one, and since she uses a sonicare, I have a good supply built up. :)

Here's a hen that I'm taking to Newnan.

Lovely bird!  Bantam or large fowl?
Hope you are safe from the snow/ice storm.

Thanks!! She's bantam. We had some rain today, cold rain, :(. When I get home I'll have to get her cleaned up again. They have a heat lamp. It's just when it rains it gets muddy.

Maybe keep her inside? Some of the birds I show are white. And I think they know how hard it is I keep them clean. I swear I give them a bath and the purposely find a mud hole!

We just had to have one of our hens put down

. We were thinking of getting a chick but what are some of your thoughts on raising one or should we not raise just one by it self. We do have 3 older but Small couple 7-8 old birds that when the little one got bigger could visit with(they are very sweet gentle birds so I'm not worried that the chick would be picked on) with our supervision of course. Have any of you raised just one chick with success. Thanks

Sorry to hear abou our hen. I would by raise just 1 chick. I would raise a minimum of 3 in case something happens to one the other 2 will have each other. Chickens are not solitaire animals and need to grow with companions around the same age. And no matter how sweet tour chickens are it is only likely that they are all going to e accepting a chick. Maine will likely feel like the need to establish a pecking order and injury the chick. Even with supervision one hard peck to the head could seriously hurt or kill a chick.
