Cochin Thread!!!

The columbian and mottleds look like they have nice type. The reds seem to need some work.

the reds are a KNOWN problem. LOL I was just posting pics of what I have to work with... the silver laced is another 'project' variety that needs help in both lacing and type.
that's why I got tom's buff boy and a couple nicer red boys from Joanie, to help with the reds.

Since we're posting pics of projects (yours are BEAUTIFUL Karen!) I thought I'd post a few of mine. My birds are nowhere near show quality, and I don't ever plan on doing any showing with them, but I do plan on working toward improving their type as well as patterning/coloration. Right now I'm just happy to have friendly feathered flowers roaming around my yard and being entertaining

Almost all of the birds in these pics are on the young side too, and are not yet mature.

A couple of my Mille Fleurs/calicos. I will be getting some additional birds from Roslyn Pickens in a month or two, and have a few more that I don't have pics of, so hopefully I'll be able to use them to improve patterning and type as well. A few of the chicks that I've gotten from other sources lately have turned out to be solid partridge

Polito - he's been getting some additional mottling in his chest feathers and feet, but the only place he's got the black tips are on his hackle feathers. I know he has a lemon blue look to him, but he came out of a pen full of nothing but calico/MF birds!

Carmella - Looked like a full blown MF as a chick, then lost nearly all of her patterning

Here's my barred pair, they're a recent acquisition. I hope to improve type (especially foot feathering) and also the patterning. I want to see more BARRING like other breeds instead of cuckoo. I've been trying to get in touch with some of the more well known breeders of this variety in the hopes of purchasing some stock from them, but nobody will respond to me at all.

I've got some young blue and black mottled birds that I'll be working with, but they're not much for "smiling for the camera" and it's impossible to get a pic of what they really do look like. Seems like all of my pics turn out with them looking like feathered giraffes....long necks, no cushion, etc.

And finally, the start of a chocolate project. I REALLY like the color/pattern on the cockerel, but he's got a ways to go regarding type and foot feathering. Same with his girlfriend. I've been reading a lot of the chocolate project threads on here and would like to acquire some nice black birds to work on improving this variety.

Thank you for letting me share! If anybody has any ideas on birds to help improve the barred and chocolate varieties in particular I'd like some input. I know that better barred bantam cochins exist, but if I can't get a response from their breeders when I want to buy birds from them, I'm not sure how I'd get my hands on anything.

That's a good idea!

I'll be the first to admit I've gotten eggs from Roslyn myself, but be careful with type, her birds do seem to throw a lot of stiff tail feathers. that's a battle i'm trying to fight in several color varieties, including mille fleur - my first roo was one of hers, no others ever hatched, so I went elsewhere for girls. i'm working with 2nd and 3rd generation girls from that original roo (lost him last summer to a coon). some varieties seem to have a harder time with the stiff tails, but I've seen a LOT of it in the mille fleur and only a few breeders I can think of are breeding away from it in preference for type over color... so that's why I've gotten some other varieties to work with that I can integrate into the stiff tail lines that won't set me back horribly for color/pattern but should help immeasurably with type...

the Columbian roo will go with the one completely laced girl, producing chicks that are homozygous for Co, and heterozygous for Ml and Pg. bred back to a fully laced bird will improve the lacing but backstep the type slightly, but each time I cross the Columbian with a good type over the laced, the type should improve....

the buff over the reds - the only difference genetically is that buff has Dilute, while red doesn't. everything else should be the same. (but may not be since I think my reds do have a partridge background, which needs to be eliminated - buff has wheaten)

mottled with mille fleur... the mottling should stay the same, but the e-locus is different from each other, so there will be some differences here and there.

some colors are slightly compatible so you don't have to backpedal as badly as others might cause...

my next cochin acquisition will be either brown-red or lemon blue maybe...

Some breeders have heavy partridge in their birds wanting to improve pattern. Ki4got correct me if i am off on genetics but the columbian x mottled lines should be a wheaten base and produce a solid yellow chick right?

mottled is E, Columbian could be eWh or eb... I've seen some breeds mention one or the other.

I have several bloodlined calico/mf with some coming from Roslyn. I bought 2 doz eggs and all but 3 hatched. I got some beautifully typed birds and a few I can work with but over all. I love them and will def be a repeat buyer!
I picked out 7 diff colors from her and loved my blue mottleds from her too!
