Cochin Thread!!!

I bought hatchin eggs and these came out of them :) and they are truely blue!

I just crossed them on one of my best calico roos and currently hatchin 50 eggs out! I have other calicos but I marked all their eggs to see what I get!

WOOHOO!!!

my boys are HERE!

2 reds from Joanie and a silver laced from the breeder my original bunch came from! the reds were entirely wild, couldn't get any good pics, they wouldn't stand still. LOL glad I unpacked them last. the silver laced is pretty mellow.

a few things I don't like about him, but given the alternative of NO silver laced roo...

he's got dark legs/feet/beak, his feet aren't heavily feathered (tho the feathers show some damage from being on dirt), he's got some stiff tail feathers and his cushion isn't really wide/full.

but he's here and he's mine, so he's wonderful! LOL and my best girl has nice yellow legs, so hopefully she'll balance him out.

Long story short, Jamie (from Jamie Matts) needed a bath today because his tail drags the ground and it was pretty icky. I was not looking forward to this task at all. He got his beak, toe nails and tush plucked for breeding, too.

His wing carriage is not this low, he was acting like a goof on the wood pile - acting like he couldn't balance on them. Because of this, he's not standing naturally, either. He does have some white tips on his sweepers, which is why I think Jamie parted with him. He is a very sweet rooster though. He was very good through his bath and me trying to get all the poo off of each feather without ripping them out.

Poor boy was panting after all the blow drying! It took me an hour+ to bathe and dry him!
I am still fighting to fix his underbite. His upper beak was broke when I got him and the bottom keeps growing faster than the top.

I love him and agree he is much better than having no SL. I am happy for you!

Karen, I think he looks pretty nice, most definitely better than no silver laced male, and I look forward to seeing pics of the offspring! Hope you are able to get pics of the reds soon - sounds like you had a busy day, in a good way :)

Andy -

I am thinking the following regarding the genetics of your mystery cockerel. I'd say that the base is on wheaten - could be eWH/eWH or eWh/eb. Add to that possibly blue to account for the ground color. Next, likely Columbian for the hackle and tail pattern. And lastly, I'd say at least one dose of autosomal red. He is somewhat similar to some of a cockerel from my blue silver wheaten (with red) project I'm tinkering with.
