Hey guys! Can anyone tell me the faults of my duo of buff bantam cochins? Are they a good breeding pair? The pullet has not yet reached point of lay.

can't say mine are the best, because they're not... this is a roo I got from a top breeder. he's a shade too dark to be a good buff, but he's got a nice wide full cushion good headset and tight wings...

well, the breeder he came from has some of the top buffs in the country and is also a judge... I'd take his word first. tho I would like to show this guy off at least once. 8)

Shape is even more important than color. Your rooster appears to be more Large Fowl (LF) Cochin than he is bantam.

I agree with Joanie. When I saw him I thought he was LF. He is leggy for a bantam.
Always, always, always when you want to know what a bantam Cochin should look like, think basketball! That is basically what they are. However, not every bird is a perfect circle on a circle but that is what you should be breeding for in bantams.
And buffs are very hard. The shade has to be a good even color all the way through. Most times on a rooster the tail is too dark, as well as the wings, if you can even get the shade correct to start with.

My LF look more like hearts. Albeit, a crooked one. I am not so much into LF as the bantams, though.

I thought that was an understood rule. I was just wondering about the desired color of a buff Cochin and what is preferred. I've heard a more vibrant buff was preferred and wanted to hear opinions on it.

Thank you for the information. I need to breed for a rounder bottom line then. I'm going to purchase the standard of perfection in a few days and read more thoroughly on Cochins.

I am guessing he is the result of a Columbian male x Buff Columbian hen sex linked cross. Males from these crosses are considered culls because they have no place in a breeding program. Won't help either variety.
